Maj Michael Sorbello, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Maj. Michael Sorbello, U.S. Army (Ret.),88, of Bowie, MD, passed on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at his home, after a long illness. He was born on July 14, 1920 in Providence, RI to Domenic and Marie Theresa (nee Mangano) Sorbello. He graduated from Classical High School in Providence, RI in 1938 and Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS in 1957. Mr. Sorbello worked for the American Red Cross as an Assistant National Director for Personnel from 1961 until his retirement in 1981. He served in the U. S. Army from 1940-1961 and worked his way to Major. He was Platoon Leader of Artillery Battalion, was awarded an Army Commendation Medal and various other campaign ribbons and served in 4 Military Campaigns.Mr. Sorbello was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Bowie, MD and an avid reader. He is survived by his wife, Julia Sorbello of Bowie, MD, who he married in 1950; a son, Michael Sorbello of Melbourne, FL; daughters, Lorraine Sorbello of Baltimore, MD, Shirley Cooke of Crofton, MD and Terry Sorbello of Ellicott City, MD; and 5 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, Salvatore and Alfred Sorbello and his sisters, Sally Gomes and Connie Gallinelli all of Rhode Island.Family will receive friends at the family owned BEALL FUNERAL HOME, 6512 NW Crain Hwy. (rte. 3 South), Bowie, MD on Saturday, January 10, 2009 from 11:00am until service time, 1:00pm. Interment, Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 3:00pm.
