THEY CALLED HIM SONNY BOY.
On the 30th of December 2019, Alexander Steele died in Bowie Maryland after a short stay at the Brookdale Assisted Living facility, of coronary artery disease. He was 86. He spent his formative years in Moruga, Trinidad before migrating to the United States and settling in Largo Maryland in 1971. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Lynette Steele of 60 years, his children Noel, Gary, Sharon and Karen, and nine grandchildren. He was uncle Sonny Boy to Veronica, Franklyn, Geraldine, McLean, Kent, Florence, Glen, Elsa, Carol, Alvin, recently deceased Joe and Ruby, and their children.
As a police detective in Trinidad, he was diligent, studious, and stubborn, even aggressive. Many feared him and many adored him. Later, he worked in the security department of Holy Cross Hospital where his colleagues admired his sense of humor, cheerfulness, and meticulous work habits.
Alex was an athlete – sprinter, cricketer, and swimmer. He loved deep sea fishing, feting, Carnival, the Mighty Sparrow, Duke, Lord Kitchener, and the Dallas Cowboys. His in-laws regarded him as family, especially Silvina McDavid (sister-in-law).
Sonny Boy was cremated; the family will disperse his ashes in Moruga Trinidad according to his wishes. Family will receive friends on Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 10am to 11am at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 14111 Oak Grove Road, Upper Marlboro, MD 20774 followed by a memorial service at 11am.
