Alice J. McGroarty, 88, of Long Neck, Delaware, was united with Christ on Thursday, February 3, 2022. Alice loved the Lord and began each day watching Mass and expressing her devotion to the Blessed Mother by praying the Rosary.

Alice was born in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania, on February 8, 1933, to the late Adolph and Celia Kumitis. After graduating from Edwardsville High School, where she perfected many spirit-filled cheers, Alice followed her dream of becoming a nurse. Upon graduating from Nursing school, she met her beloved husband of 53 years, John, and together they raised their five children in Riverdale, Maryland. She spent 25 years in the nursing profession, retiring from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Prince George’s Hospital in Cheverly, Maryland.

Alice loved spending time in the kitchen creating delicious meals and desserts for her family. Known for whipping up crepes suzettes for breakfast, potato salad for holiday dinners, or her infamous nut rolls as a holiday treat, she always made sure her family ate well.  She loved music--a passion she passed down to her family. Alice had a beautiful voice and sang special songs to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, telling each of them how much she loved them.

She enjoyed traveling to Cancun, the Outer Banks, Florida, and New England. These were special memories with family, as were summers at the beach where she could be found crabbing from the dock, and playing Po-Ke-No, UNO, and video games. Her twilight years were spent watching countless foreign television series.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband John, brother Lawrence Kumitis, and grandson Aaron Williams. She is survived by her brother Frank Kogut (Barbara), her loving sister Karen, sister-in-law Irene Kumitis, and brother-in-law Walter Burke. She is also survived by her children Mary McGroarty (Rick Moran), Kathleen Carter, Patrick McGroarty (Helen), Teresa Cochrane (Jim), and John McGroarty Jr. (Beth Torp), seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Heaven gained an angel on February 3. Our family surrounded her with prayers and love in her final hours. Our lives will never be the same without her, but we are so incredibly fortunate to have an abundance of precious memories to look back on. Alice was the epitome of grace and beauty, but most of all she embodied love. The love she had for her family was boundless. Her family was her life. She loved with all her heart and her love was returned by everyone around her.

The family invites friends to call at the Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Highway (Route 3 South), Bowie, Maryland 20715, on Sunday, February 13, from 5 to 8 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Ave S, Millersville, Maryland 21108, on Monday, February 14, at 11:30 a.m.  Interment will follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Alice’s name.
