In Loving Memory of Allen James Veasey
February 8, 1940 – June 28, 2025
With heartfelt sorrow we announce the passing of Allen James Veasey on June 28, 2025, at the age of 85. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Allen was deeply loved and respected by all who knew him.
Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, to Clifton Allen Veasey and Laura Virginia Bingham, Allen enjoyed attending spring training baseball games with his brother, John, collecting autographs from some of the game’s all-time greats and kindling his lifelong love of sports. Allen spent his teen years in Morgantown, West Virginia playing baseball, basketball, competitive chess, and learning bridge from his father, a serious and accomplished player.
After earning his BA in English from West Virginia University, he moved to Maryland and began a 31-year career at the National Security Agency, where his logical and problem-solving skills thrived in the emerging field of computer systems.
An avid runner for many years, Allen was a familiar sight on his daily runs around Crofton Parkway. He was active in the Annapolis Striders running club, earning many age-group awards in their races and their “Ironman” distinction. He resolved to run a marathon, joined the Striders’ Moore’s Marine training group, and completed the Marine Corps Marathon eight times, eventually achieving his goal of finishing in under four hours.
He loved games of all kinds, especially cards and most especially bridge. A four-time winner of the NSA Bridge Championship, Allen achieved this rare distinction with four different partners and holds the ACBL rank of Silver Life Master. Whether playing croquet, chess, a board game, or a hand of bridge, his competitive spirit and analytic mind always shone through.
Allen’s quiet strength, humor, and unwavering love for his family will be remembered always. He had a dry wit that brought many laughs and was a passionate fan of his local sports teams, especially the Commanders, Wizards, Terrapins, Orioles, Nationals, and beloved West Virginia Mountaineers.
Allen is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Barbara Barnes, and his four sons: John and Bob (with his first wife, the late Maralea Armstrong), and Michael and David (with Barbara). He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Patricia (Stephen Bock), Camden, Steven, Ren, Kendall, Victor, Zac, and Violet. Allen is lovingly remembered by his daughters-in-law—Frances, Allyson, and Mary—each of whom shared a deep and mutual affection with Allen.
With love, the Veasey family recognizes family members who were part of Allen’s life:
