Anne Pauline Gallagher, beloved wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully May 23, 2026, in Annapolis, MD, surrounded by family and friends. Anne was born on October 31, 1931, in Hazelton PA. Anne was indeed a treat to all who met her.
Anne graduated from The College of Misericordia in 1953. She was married on November 24,1955 to James J. Gallagher, Jr. Together, they moved to Washington D.C. to build careers and a family. They later moved to Riverdale MD where they raised their children and were parishioners of St. Bernard’s Church. Anne lived her life centered on love, family, faith, helping others, and strength. When her husband, Bud, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Anne stepped up and cared for him until his death. Her kindness, wisdom and wit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Over the years Anne taught typing and shorthand at Prince Georges Community College, and civil service prep classes at Bladensburg Senior High School adult education center. Many women credited Anne for helping them find productive careers to provide for their families. In the early 70s she taught typing at DeMatha Catholic High School.
Anne is survived by five children and their spouses: Jim Gallagher (Linda), Mary Gast (Fred), Susan Holt (Bob), Jack Gallagher, Robert Gallagher (Amy); twelve grandchildren and their spouses: Jimmy Gast, Bobby Holt (Monica), Brian Gast (Heather), Michael Gast (Michelle), Kevin Holt (Karen), Brooke Sheehy (Jeff), Brandon Gallagher, Brittany Gallagher, Taylor Gallagher (Devin), Shane Gallagher, Braden Gallagher, Nolan Gallagher; and eight great-grandchildren: Noah, Theo, Natalie, Elijah, Parker, Cameron, Miles, and Camden.
Anne’s grandchildren knew her as “Baba”, the matriarchal anchor of the family (in Slavic culture). Not only was she loved, but she was also revered for her deep wisdom, resilience, and culinary traditions. Anne’s greatest joy came from caring and cooking for those she loved. Anne will always be remembered for her “kiss marks” that she would leave on the hands of her nieces, nephews, and carried that tradition on to her grandchildren whenever she or they were leaving.
Later, Anne moved to Bowie, made friends and became a member of Sacred Heart Church. In 2007, Anne suffered a stroke. Although paralyzed on the left side, Anne continued her positive attitude and witty sense of humor. Although she could no longer cook, she continued sharing her recipes with family and friends. She attended her grandchildren’s games, graduations, and weddings. She spent many of her later years in Spa Creek Center in Annapolis, MD where she made more friends, many of whom became like family.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations go to either: Activities Department, Autumn Lakes at Spa Creek, 35 Milkshake Lane, Annapolis, MD 21403 or Hospice of Chesapeake, John & Cathy Belcher Campus, 90 Ritchie Highway, Pasadena, Maryland 21112.
