Annie Belle Knight Dixon (Belle) was born on March 20, 1937 to Sarah Elizabeth Bullock Knight and Walter Knight. Raised on the family farm in Scotland Neck, North Carolina (NC), Belle received her early education in the Halifax County, NC Public School System. Later, she attended Winston Salem State University (WSSU) in Winston Salem, NC, where she would meet and marry John Albert Dixon. John and Belle were married for 61 years, until his death in 2022.
Following their marriage, John and Belle returned to settle in Belle’s family home of Scotland Neck, and raise their family. Their blessed union produced three children—Michael Anthony (Stephanie), Wanda Jean (Solomon) and Lisa Annette (David), as well as one granddaughter, Michia, who she cherished beyond measure. Once back in Scotland Neck, Belle continued her educational pursuits at Halifax Community College, eventually reaching her goal of becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). In working as an RN, Belle had truly found her calling, as she committed herself to helping all those in her care, while sharing a special warmth for senior patients. Following her official retirement from nursing, Belle even found time to serve as a hospice volunteer, furthering her commitment to providing comfort to those in need.
In recent years, both John and Belle lived in Bowie, Maryland. This was closer to their daughters. In Maryland, Belle enjoyed the many outings that her beloved family and caregivers planned for her, as well as numerous cookouts and gatherings, where her presence was a special joy to all. In March of this year, Belle told her daughters and caregivers that she wanted to go on a boat for her 88th Birthday. God subsequently blessed us with the opportunity to join her on a trip on the famous Odyssey Cruise around Washington DC. She had an amazing time on this cruise, enjoying her love of music, dancing, and meeting new people. Known as a second mom to many of her nieces and nephews, Belle treasured the company of family and friends, who made a point to connect with her as much as possible.
In addition to her children and granddaughter, Belle leaves two sisters to cherish her memory- Hazel Knight Lewis of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and Dorothy Knight Scott of Crofton, Maryland, as well as a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Sarah, her sister Geneva Louise Knight Horsley, and her brothers John, Aldean, James (called Bob) and Robert Knight.
Although saddened and mourning now, Belle’s family will continue to honor her life by sharing their love, hope and joy here on earth, until they are all once again united in heaven by God’s grace. We will celebrate her life at the Beall Funeral Home, located at 6512 NW Crain Highway, Bowie, MD 20715 on December 21, 2025 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. The funeral home’s website address is beallfuneral.com, where the service will be livestreamed, and additional details will be provided.
The family would be greatly encouraged and comforted if those who are interested would make a donation in her memory, to Amedisys Hospice Care or the United Negro College Fund.
