Anthony Steeple

December 4, 1948 — October 6, 2025

Anthony Steeple, an avid reader and historian, was born December 4, 1948, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late John Steeple and Mazie Bishop Steeple. He was nurtured and raised by loving parents. Subsequently, Mazie married Lawrence Jennings and Anthony was blessed that the embracing support continued. He certainly blessed his blended family of the Steeple, Bishop and Jennings, who all adored him, by sharing his insights and wisdom.

He graduated from Baltimore City College and then attended Baltimore Community College. Thereafter, he attended Towson State University.

The 1960’s and 70’s were a pivotal time that shaped Anthony’s belief for peace and justice for all persons of color, including Mother Africa. At this time, he crossed over taking on a new Akon African name, Brother Owusu. (Owusu means strong and powerful man.) He was a man in support of the African Liberation struggle.

During Anthony’s growth journey, he was fortunate to work in many areas. He was a caddy at a golf course in the Pocono Mountains. He also worked for Random House books (which supported his love of reading), was a taxi driver, and was a Quality Control Engineer at Link Simulation Systems.

Additionally, Anthony always had an entrepreneurial spirit. This drive and his passion for sales afforded him the opportunity to host events selling various products. He also co-owned a night club.

Anthony had a distinguished career as an Investment Advisor Representative, Regional Vice President at Primerica. He was enthusiastic, assisting people to become financially independent.

Despite his commitment to entrepreneurial, private and public service, Anthony found time to travel the globe by air, land and sea. Whether it was a short trek through North America, the Caribbean or a long trip to South America and Africa, Anthony thoroughly enjoyed the different cultures, food and traditions of the world beyond the District of Columbia. He learned so much about the world through the lens of his own eyes.

Anthony loved life and his family and had a variety of passions. He enjoyed sharing historical facts and events with everyone and elevating peoples’ thought processes about how they shape our society today. He was an avid basketball player and a lover of history, music, and football. He was a foodie who enjoyed eating you out of your house and home and what a jokester he was!!! He was also a man of integrity.

As a child, Anthony attended Fountain Baptist Church, Baltimore, Md. He was previously a member of People’s Community Baptist Church, Silver Spring. He was so proud to participate in the one hundred men’s choir. At the time of his death, he was attending New Beginning Church of God of Prophecy, Seabrook, MD. We can rejoice in knowing that prior to his death he gave his life to Christ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Steeple and Lawrence and Mazie Jennings, as well as his siblings, Gary Jennings (Ernestine/living) and Angela Cooper. Brother-in-laws, Larry Porter and Edward Williams Jr. and his ex-wife, Nadine Evans.

Anthony leaves to cherish his memory, his sons, Sékou Steeple and Kamau Steeple. His grandchildren, Sharena Steeple and Khari Steeple (son of Malia). A supportive long-time loved one, Karen Vessup. Siblings, Carolyn Porter, Deborah Robinson, Diane Williams, Lawrence Jennings (Dana), Sharon Jennings and Cousin-sister, Brenda Carr (Robert).

Also, he leaves a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 18, 2025 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at New Beginnings Church of God of Prophecy, 6017 Cipriano Road, Seabrook, Maryland 20706. Services will follow at 12:00pm.
