Arthur Herbert Ehlers, Jr (Art) beloved husband, father and uncle passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 2 at the age of 91 in Venice, Florida. He was the beloved son of the late Arthur Herbert Ehlers and late Evelyn (nee Harrison), cherished husband of Irene “Renee” (nee Carman) and devoted father to Evelyn, Arthur III and the late Anne Elizabeth. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Art was born in Baltimore in 1933 and from his early childhood developed a love of sports that would continue for the rest of his life. His favorite was baseball which he played every chance he had on school teams, little league and pick-up games. He was also a talented basketball player and would play both sports in high school and college. Later in life he developed a passion for tennis and excelled in that as well. Upon graduating Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, Art signed a minor league baseball contract as a shortstop with the Kansas City Athletics and did so well he was called up to the major leagues. However, just before he was to make his major league debut, he received his draft notice and was inducted into the US Army. While serving in Germany he found a way to continue his passion for baseball by joining the Army baseball team. He also served as a military policeman. Upon being discharged from the army in 1958 he returned to Baltimore where he managed a bowling alley. It was here that he met his future wife Renee Carman. They quickly fell in love and married in 1960. In the early 1960s Art and Renee moved to the Washington DC area where Art began his career as a Senior Executive in the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. In 1995 after 33 years of service Art retired. Soon after retirement Art and Renee split time between Maryland and Florida before eventually moving to Venice where Art become an all-star shortstop on his senior league softball team. He enjoyed playing in various tournaments across the United States winning 3 gold medals in the Maryland Senior Softball Olympics along with a National Championship. He would continue playing softball for decades to come. Art was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his wife, children and extended family. He enjoyed playing tennis with Renee, coaching Evelyn and Arthur’s little league teams, summer family crab feasts, cookouts, birthday celebrations and trips to the local baseball field to play ball with his nieces and nephews. He was also an avid Orioles fan who never missed a game. The family will receive friends at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Thursday, April 17 from 6pm-8pm and on Friday, April 18 from 10am – 11am where funeral services will be held following the viewing. Interment to follow at Gardens of Faith Cemetery, 5598 Trumps Mill Road, Baltimore. In lieu of flowers please honor Art with a donation to The BrightFocus Foundation a leader in Alzheimer’s Research.
