With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Cronin, who died peacefully at home in Lanham, Maryland, on May 5, 2025, at the age of 83. She was surrounded by the love of her family after a life defined by compassion, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those around her.
Born on June 6, 1941, in Hyattsville, Maryland, Barbara was the daughter of Barbara Katherine Young and Mark Raymond Skinner. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her beloved aunt, Nellie Howlin.
Barbara is survived by her devoted husband, Robert Cronin, and their four children: Robert (Pam), Scott, Shawn, and Shannon. She also leaves behind eleven cherished
grandchildren - Nicole, Ryan, Barbara, Alexis, Scott, Joshua, Robert, Annabella, Nicholas, Chase and Braden - and one great-grandchild, Vanessa. Her boundless love and wisdom deeply blessed each of them.
A proud trailblazer, Barbara was one of the first women accepted into the University of Maryland's Business School - a testament to her intelligence, determination, and pioneering spirit. After graduating, she began her professional career at the prestigious law firm Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. She went on to build a remarkable career at the University of Maryland, where she worked for nearly 50 years. Her dedication and warmth left a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues and her contributions will not be forgotten.
Barbara's generosity extended beyond her professional life. She was deeply involved in her community, volunteering for many years at St. John's Church and supporting the Lanham Boys and Girls Club - especially in cheerleading, where she brought enthusiasm and encouragement to countless young people.
Above all, Barbara was the heart of her family - a steady, loving presence who freely gave her time, energy, and affection. Her grace, humor, and strength will be remembered with deep love and gratitude
A celebration of Barbara's life will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery (1122 Sunrise Beach Road, Crownsville, Maryland 21032). Friends and loved ones are invited to share condolences and memories on this memorial page. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)
