Carmela G. Murli

Carmela Murli was born on April 28, 1935, in Fiumedinisi (Messina), Sicily. She passed away on March 6, 2023.

Carmela emigrated from Italy to the United States with her family on February 14, 1973, and made her home in Lanham, Maryland since then.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening and most of all cooking for her family and friends. She was a wiz with the sewing machine and did alterations for family and clients. In later years she took up counted cross-stitch and made many different projects for her family. She loved gardening spending many hours in the spring and summer tending to her flowers, and in the garden growing all sorts of vegetables including, beans, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and tomatoes to name a few. In late summer she gathered the family to can tomatoes, and in the autumn brought the family together to work with her husband, Gianni, to make his famous wine, which family and friends enjoyed at gatherings. Throughout the year she tended to a variety of plants that she kept on her sun porch.

She loved cooking for family and friends. Homemade macaroni and Sicilian arancini (rice balls) were two of her family’s favorites.  Seeing the kids and grandkids at the table helping prepare dishes such as these made her so happy.  Most of all though, she loved to be with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the joy of here life.

Carmela was proceeded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Eugenio (Gianni). She is survived by her children: Carmelo Murli, Maria Isaja, Gabriela Marques and Giovanna Ertel; Six Grandchildren:  Cristina, Joseph, Alessandro, Elaina, Luca and Matteo; and two Great Grandchildren: Alessandra and Milania.
