Charles "Chuck" K. New

November 26, 1966 — December 27, 2019

On December 27, 2019, Chuck passed away unexpectedly in Bowie, Maryland. He was the beloved husband of 19 years to Bernadette, proud father of Brendan, Patricia, MaryKatherine and Ronan New, son of Carole Anne New and O. Kent New, Jr. He is also survived by a brother David New (Vicki) and sister Leah New; in-laws: Terrence O’Brien, Ellen O’Brien (Russell Souder), Katherine Kramer (Kirk), Mary O’Brien (Wayne Hewitt), Daniel O’Brien (Michelle), John O’Brien, Robert O’Brien, Patrick O’Brien (Teresa) and Margaret Doyle (Tom); nieces: Victoria New, Cassidy O’Brien, Annie Doyle, Delaney O’Brien, Monica O’Brien, Murphy O’Brien, Catherine Hewitt, Alyson Hewitt. Nephews: Ryan New, Jason New, James LaRue (Brandie), Michael LaRue, Dunecan O’Brien, Sean Doyle, Matthew O’Brien and Timothy O’Brien; great-nieces; Avery and Morgan LaRue, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Chuck lived his whole life in Prince George’s County. He grew up in New Carrollton on his cherished Newberry Lane and, once married, moved to Bowie. He attended Parkdale High School graduating in 1985. Upon graduation he decided to follow his father and uncles’ footsteps into the world of printing. He worked in the printing industry where he made countless lifelong friendships.

Chuck was passionate about his family, friends, music and if you knew Chuck, you knew how much he loved his Yankees! So much so that he and Bernie named their first dog Yankee! Chuck could recall very specific facts about games that were played long before he was even born. He loved the Yankees not just because they usually had a winning record, but because of the teams rich history. His love for the Yankees and the game of baseball led him to collect baseball cards and sports memorabilia, attend Yankees games in New York and locally, visit the Baseball Hall of Fame and play catcher in a sandlot league in the neighborhood as well as an adult travel league.

Chuck loved listening to a wide variety of music. He attended many concerts growing up, but some of his favorite “concerts” were when his father, brother, uncles and nephews would gather to have a “live” concert in someone’s living room. Chuck always made sure the night would not end until he got through his list of requests. There were many requests which kept his father playing long into the night!

Chuck enjoyed engaging in lengthy conversations with both friends and strangers—some of those strangers became friends--especially if the conversations revolved around some of his interests. He would talk passionately with anyone about sports, history or just things happening in his community. His love and knowledge of historical facts and exact dates was impressive and, again, the reason the Yankees were so dear to him.

On a September night in 1996, Chuck was introduced to Bernie through a mutual friend. That first night, Chuck was not shy about revealing his ability to finish three plates of food, which didn’t chase Bernie away! Chuck loved that he found a girl who he could talk sports with! They dated for several years and married October 21, 2000 at Ascension Catholic Church in Bowie. Brendan was born in 2002, Patty in 2003, MaryKate in 2007 and Ronan in 2008. Their lives were very busy but they made plenty of time to get to know their neighbors in south Bowie. The family spends their summers at Pointer Ridge Pool and attended St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church as a family even before Chuck fully entered the Catholic faith. He attended RCIA classes which is when his friendship developed with his dear friend and fellow baseball fan, Father John Barry. He was so proud to be a Catholic and had a deep love for the sacrament of confession.

Chuck’s pride and joy were his children. Ask him about how they did in a soccer game, swim meet or at school and he would give you every detail of their accomplishments. He felt like they were the best at everything they did even if they didn’t believe it themselves! He was proud of their dedication to school, work and each other. He had a special nickname for each of them that only he used. He worked hard to support them and provide them with all they needed. He was their shining star when Bernie became ill taking care of every detail on his own sometimes turning away help so he could prove what he could do by himself. Often when the kids’ friends or his nieces and nephews came over, you could find him cooking enough food to feed them all and asking them about the things they were involved in. His children were the most important to him.

Chuck was a very big man (who loved to show off his strength!) but he had an even bigger heart. He couldn’t be more proud of the family he and Bernie created. All he wanted from life was to be the best dad, husband, brother, son and friend and maybe get to a few games at Yankee stadium. He will be missed by many.
