Daniel Jerome Scholfield (1953-2026) Daniel J. Scholfield, 73, of Crofton, Maryland passed away on February 8th, 2026. He was born in Washington, D.C. on September 30th, 1953 to Charles and Elegia (Alice) Scholfield. Daniel grew up in Hyattsville, MD, surrounded by family and friends with a plethora of stories of his youth passed down for years to his own children.
Daniel attended Saint John's College High School before starting at St. Mary’s College, where he would meet his future wife of 46 years, Linda. After many fun times at St. Mary’s, he graduated from The University of Maryland at College Park. He swiftly began his career at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) working with human nutrition research and then animal welfare.
Dan was a devoted and loving father to his two children, Tom and Wendy. They dearly miss him and the many life lessons that he consistently imparted upon them. He took great pride in being a dad and grandfather to Lillian, Miles, Finn, and Caroline. For Wendy and Tom, he stepped in as their soccer coach and timer at swim meets, always in attendance at Cross Country events, field hockey games and even Key Club conventions with more high schoolers than any adult would likely choose to be around. He took the grandkids to school and kept them home with him when they were babies. He may have enjoyed nap time more than they did!
Daniel loved running, growing tomatoes in his garden, eating seafood, and being at the beach. He firmly believed in the goodness of other people and that everyone had a story worth sharing. He took a great deal of pride in serving his local community through many different organizations and truly believed the best in people.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Alice Scholfield and his in laws Violet and Thomas Gatton. He is survived by his wife, Linda, his children Tom and Wendy, daughter-in-law, Michelle, grandchildren Lillian, Miles, Finn and Caroline.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 28th from 2:30-4:30pm at the Village Commons Community Center at the Village at Waugh Chapel 1326 Main Chapel Way Gambrills, MD 21054. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Surfrider Foundation.
