Derrick Maurice Sewer, II was born on July 2, 1992, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., to Kelly Long Chappelle and Derrick Maurice Sewer, I. He was educated in Prince George’s County Public Schools, Anne Arundel County Public Schools, and Anne Arundel Community College, where he formed lifelong friendships and created unforgettable memories. Derrick II was called to eternal rest on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
Derrick grew up in Lanham and Crofton, Maryland, surrounded by his parents and a large, loving family who helped shape the man he became. From day one, his family poured love, faith, strength, and guidance into him. Family was at the center of Derrick’s life, and Sunday dinners were a beloved tradition that brought everyone together.
Derrick took great pride in his work as the owner and operator of DMS Logistics LLC, as well as in his work with Anne Arundel County Public Schools. Derrick found his true calling through basketball. He coached boys’ basketball at the AAU level and at Southern High School in Harwood, Maryland.
To the players he coached, he was known simply as Coach D, but he was so much more than a coach. Derrick loved his players as if they were his own sons. He poured his time, knowledge, love, and energy into his players, their families, and his fellow coaches. For many of his players, Coach D became a father figure, mentor, role model, and trusted source of guidance. His impact reached far beyond the basketball court, and the lessons he taught will remain with those he coached for years to come.
Derrick was a devoted father to his sons, Jeremiah and Blake Sewer. He cherished his boys and took great pride in watching them grow. His love for his sons was undeniable, and the bond they shared was one of the greatest joys of his life. His greatest legacy will live on through Jeremiah and Blake, who will carry his love, lessons, laughter, and memories with them throughout their lives.
Derrick is now reunited in eternal peace with his grandparents, Huey and Sandra Long and Barbara and Melvin Watson; uncle, Fred E. Sewer; and his “brother,” Gene Reed, who preceded him in death. We imagine they are all together again in Heaven, enjoying one of those legendary Sunday dinners, laughing, telling stories, and listening to old-school music—just like old times.
Derrick leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved sons, Jeremiah Sewer and Blake Sewer; mother and stepfather, Kelly Chappelle and Robert Chappelle; father and stepmother, Derrick Sewer and Catherine Sewer; grandfather and step-grandmother, Fred Sewer and Renee Sewer; aunts, Troy, Terri, Kia, Karen, Tracy, Faye, and Hope; uncles, Scott, Christopher, and Kenny; godmother, Pam Washington; sisters, Octevia and Tia; nieces and nephew, Amiya, Ariana, Kaci, and Akari Sewer; goddaughter, Kamryn; bonus siblings, Chanise and Hope Chappelle; and a village of cousins, extended family, family of friends, fellow coaches, players, and countless others whose lives were touched by his presence.
Though Derrick has left this earthly life, his name, his memory, his lessons, and his light will continue to live through his sons, his family, his players, and everyone blessed to have known him.
Rest well, Coach D. Your work here is done, but your legacy lives on.
