Dionicio Juan Calobong

Born November 6, 1928, Dionicio Juan Calobong, Jr, better known as DJ or Don or lovingly as Don Juan, grew up apart from his parents Alice T. Jones and Dionicio Juan Calobong, Sr, in The Industrial Home School in Georgetown, D.C.. At age 18 DJ was drafted into the United States Army to serve during the Korean War . He served his term honorably and went on to complete his education, earning a Bachelor of Commercial Science from Southeastern University in D.C. With degree in hand, DJ began his career as an auditor with the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in D.C. where he met his life-long dance partner and love, Lorraine Marie Rivas. Together, they danced and loved in marriage for 68 years, and raised five children in the Catholic faith. Marriage and children, important as they were to DJ, never kept him from the many endeavors he enjoyed. He was active in his union work at the Bank Board, known for his hard slides into home plate on his softball team and for his legendary battles with the umpires. He organized social and swim activities at University Hills and was honored with a Don Calobong Award for the best sportsperson. DJ was never afraid to share his opinions, particularly when it came to a government he believed was not doin enough for the people. He was also a master of costumes on the dance floor. DJ loved to entertain, danced with style, and swept the ladies— mostly Lorraine—off their feet. DJ passed away peacefully at the age of 97, August 29, 2026, Lorraine having predeceased him by six years. Now together, the tango keeps on.
