With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Donald Michael Howe on July 19, 2025, at the age of 82. Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose faith, warmth, and zest for life touched all who knew him.

Born on November 26, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Don pursued his passion for engineering with great dedication. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University and later received both his Master’s and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from The Catholic University of America. His distinguished career with the National Security Agency spanned over four decades, during which he served his country with excellence and integrity.

Beyond his professional achievements, Don had a lifelong passion for education and a firm belief in the power of sharing knowledge. He taught engineering and computer science at several institutions, including The Catholic University of America, University of Maryland, and Prince George’s Community College.

Through teaching, he mentored and inspired countless students, instilling in them the same intellectual curiosity and commitment to excellence that shaped his own life.

Don was a man of deep faith, perseverance and a true adventurer at heart. He delighted in exploring God’s creations, traveling to six continents, visiting over 50 U.S. national parks, and enjoying cruises and countless family adventures around the globe. He also loved swimming and biking at the beach. His greatest joy was being surrounded by family, whether hosting his legendary brunches, embarking on family outings, or tackling complex handyman projects he lovingly dubbed “vacations.” Don brought humor, heart, and boundless energy to every moment. One of his favorite traditions was gifting whimsical garden gnomes to protect his family. These gnomes now stand as cheerful reminders of his enduring love.

He was always generous with his time, cheering on his grandchildren at their games and performances, and providing airport shuttles with a smile and a snack. His quiet dependability and willingness to help will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years and childhood sweetheart, Barbara Howe (Sock), his sister Barbara Garruto, and his beloved dog, Molly.

He is lovingly remembered by his children: Don, married to Darlene; Christopher, married to Melissa; and Jeanine, married to Ian Stewart. Don was a proud grandfather to his ”cherubs”: Kristin Howe, married to Tyler Morris; Ryan Howe, married to Isabel Thurston; Andrew, Caitlin, Matthew, and Brendan Howe; and Rachel, Kyle, and Kara Stewart. In addition, he had many nieces and nephews that he shared his joy of life with.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Katherine Howe (Sullivan) and his brother Edward Howe.

Those who knew Don will remember his humor, kindness, generosity, love of a good cheesesteak, and the way he made every gathering feel like a celebration. He believed that life was an adventure meant to be shared with the ones you love — and he lived that belief every day.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
