Donald “Don” Joseph Sodero, age 86, passed away on March 18, 2026 after a long battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Don lived a life defined by dedication to his family, his work, and the many communities he served. Don attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic Academy and later graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School. Shortly after, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from October 1957 until April 1961, receiving an honorable discharge.

On August 2, 1958, Don married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Lee Sodero (Plunkett). Together they built a loving family and shared 67 wonderful years of marriage. Don spent his career as a skilled Sheet Metal Mechanic and was a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 100. From November 1976 until his retirement in May 2001, he worked for the Architect of the Capitol, contributing his craftsmanship to the historic buildings of our nation’s capital.

Outside of his professional work, Don was deeply involved in sports officiating. For many years he served as a football official with the Suburban Football Association and as an umpire with the Greater Washington Umpires Association. He valued the camaraderie and connection that came with being part of the game. After retirement, Don found what his family thought was his favorite job, driving the activity bus for the Community United Methodist Church Child Development Center, transporting students to and from Crofton area elementary schools. He took great joy in greeting the children each day and sharing his warm personality with them.

Don was a devoted, if often frustrated, fan of the Washington Commanders and a loyal supporter of the Washington Nationals. Known for his friendly nature, Don truly never met a stranger. He loved to talk, tell stories, and connect with people wherever he went.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Joyce Sodero; his brother, Johnny Sodero (Karla); and his children, Sharon O'Callaghan (Larry), Donna Kenny (John), Stephen Sodero (Kerri), and Christine Bickel (Matthew). The greatest joy in Don’s life was his family. He leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren: Sean O'Callaghan, Sarah Goehring (Lukas), Kyle Bickel, Jake Bickel, Emma Bickel, Zachary Sodero, Sloan Sodero, and Emma Sodero. He was also the very proud great-grandfather of Forrest Goehring.

Don will be remembered for his sense of humor, his kindness, and his genuine love of people. His legacy lives on in the family he adored and the countless lives he touched throughout the years. The family will be holding a private service to celebrate Don’s life.
