Edith Mabry was born on January 31, 1936, in Beulahville, Virginia (currently known as Aylett, Virginia) in King William County. She peacefully entered eternal rest on March 16, 2026 in Bowie, MD.

Edith was lovingly raised by her grandparents, William and Ida Bell Hill, in Beulahville. It was there that she learned the meaning of family, faith, love, and giving—values she carried with her throughout her entire life. She was baptized at an early age and became a member of Providence Baptist Church, where her spiritual foundation began.

After graduating from Hamilton Holmes High School in 1955, Edith moved to Washington, DC to be with her family, Robert and Helen Derricks. She continued her education at Temple Business School and proudly completed the two-year program in 1957.

Edith was a hardworking and dedicated woman who took pride in everything she did. She began her career as a file clerk in the Medical Records Department at Washington Hospital Center and, through her commitment and strong work ethic, was promoted in 1971 to clerk typist and, later, correspondence clerk. She later worked as a medical abstractor at Group Health and then as a health information correspondence technician at Kaiser Permanente until retiring in 1981.

In 1971, Edith became a member of East Washington Heights Baptist Church, where her faith continued to grow and guide her life. She served faithfully as the church’s full-time secretary from 1981 to 1998, and even after “retiring” in 1998, she continued working in this role part-time until 2011. The church was more than a place of worship for Edith; it was part of who she was. She gave her time, her energy, her cooking skills, and her heart in countless ways over the years.

Edith found joy in bowling, a passion she discovered in 1963. What started as a hobby became something she truly loved. She bowled in leagues and tournaments and traveled to many states between 1993 and 2013. Those years brought her not only enjoyment, but also friendships and lasting memories.

Above all and after God, family was everything to Edith. She shared 25 years of marriage and two sons with Lafayette General Mabry. She was a devoted and loving mother who supported her sons in everything they did and was always there—steady, encouraging, and present. She loved being surrounded by family, enjoyed long “chats” on the telephone, and had a special way of offering advice that made you feel heard and cared for. She was preceded in death by her beloved sons, Lafayette G. Mabry, Jr. (“Chucky/Chuck”) and Jeffrey Lynn Mabry.

She leaves behind a legacy of love in her three grandsons, Jason Geoffrey Mabry, Devin Marcus Mabry, and Ryan Michael Mabry; daughter-in-law, Lori Mabry; and sisters, Emily Patricia Friedman (Carl), Constance Teixeira (Antonio), and Sheila Grebowsky (Mark).

Edith will be remembered for her strength, her kindness, her faith, and the powerful way she showed love and friendship to those around her.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity.” — Proverbs 31:25
