Ethel was born in Vintondale, PA, the seventh of eight children born to Stephan and Eizabeth Hugya. She always missed getting to know her Dad as he died when she was only 5 years old.
After graduating high school in Vintondale, Mom moved near Washington DC to live with her brother Joe and his wife Carmen. It was during this period that she met her future husband Carl. They married at St. Ambrose Church in Cheverly, MD on April 28, 1956. The births of Linda, Mary and Barbara quickly followed. Their only son Mark was a surprise to all in 1970.
Ethel put God and family first in her heart as well as many friends. Her deep faith in God helped her through many of life's trials including the death of her beloved husband Carl in 2008. She and Carl were among the earliest families to join St. Matthias Church. She always maintained a deep love of her church.
Ethel freely gave of herself to her church and neighbors. She taught CCD for several years at St. Matthias and in later years worked in the guidance counselor’s office at Elizabeth Seton High School. She was always available to help a neighbor with whatever they needed. She considered everyone she knew as a blessing in her life.
Ethel was thrilled with the birth of every grandchild and great grandchild that she had. She delighted in her extended family and friend’s marriages and births and mourned every loss experienced by anyone she knew.
She is survived by all of her children and grandchildren including daughters Linda, Mary, Barbara and son Mark.
Grandchildren and great grandchildren include: Madeline (from Mary), Leilani (from Barbara) – spouse Luis – with great grandchild Luis (Kekoa) Jr.,
Aaron Jr. (from Barbara) Aaron’s partner is Alyssa with great grandchildren Selena, Karter, and Mia Hayden, Mia, Bennett (from Mark)
Ethel dearly loved nature and animals. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to an animal rescue or local animal shelter.
