The family lived in San Diego, California, and Norfolk, Virginia, before his father relocated to Manchester, Connecticut, where he taught at the vocational high school for the next 20 years. Gene graduated from Manchester High School in 1970 and joined the Navy. His first permanent duty station was in Sabana Seca, Puerto Rico, where he met his wife of more than 50 years, Joanna Morgan, who was also in the Navy. Both were cryptologic technicians in the Naval Security Group. Successive transfers included Homestead Air Force Base in Florida in 1976, Adak, Alaska, in the Aleutian Island chain in 1978 and Guam in 1980. Hurricane Andrew blew him north to Fort Meade, Maryland, in 1992 where he and his family have remained.

He was discharged on March 31, 1994, and went to work as a computer DBA for Loral, Lockheed-Martin and, finally, Oracle where he remained until he retired in 2015. During his retirement he enjoyed traveling to Europe, Belize, Mexico, Canada and all over the United States. He was active in his parish of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Crofton, Maryland, teaching baptism, religious education and marriage prep classes. He served on various church committees including their Haiti committee. He was also a Eucharistic Minister for many years.

He was predeceased by his parents and his younger sister Julie Lescroart. He is survived by his wife Joanna, daughter Jessica, who served in the Air Force and Navy, son Stephen who served in the Air Force and is now in the Space Force, and daughter-in-law Jacqueline and their four children, Aryah, Samantha, Daxton and Lucy, his daughter Tiffany by a former marriage and her three children, Britany, Christopher, and Piper, his brother Richard Lescroart of Carolina, Rhode Island, and his sister Cathy Ford of Vernon, Connecticut, and their families.
