Dr. Francis Shieh, 100, formerly of Shanghai, China died on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at his residence in Upper Marlboro, MD. Dr. Shieh was a resident of Upper Marlboro for 56+ years.
Born in Shanghai, China on February 7, 1926, he was the son of the late Professor Wei Yu Xie and Peying Chen. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts and Social Sciences from St. John’s University, Shanghai, China in 1946 and then entered the U.S. from China through San Francisco in 1947 on the ship named General W. H. Gordon, escaping Communists in Shanghai. Francis married Agnes Lee on November 26, 1955, in New York City. He received his Master of Arts degree in Political Economics from Georgetown University in 1950 and then his Doctorate degree in 1978.
Dr. Shieh taught at the following locations: Army Language School in Monterey, CA; Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Prince George’s Community College in Largo, MD; Montgomery Community College in Rockville, MD; and Dictyon in Greenbelt, MD.
Dr. Shieh is survived by his children and their spouses: Joseph and Ilona Shieh of Malaga, Spain, Michael and Cassandra Shieh of Bowie, Maryland, Lucas and Ayni Liu of Sao Paolo, Brazil, Chris and Dana Shieh of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife and daughter Grace Ann Chow.
