On Thursday, August 7, 2025, George G. Angelopoulos, 54, of Lanham, Maryland, suddenly and unexpectedly left his earthly home to be with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, in his eternal home in heaven. George was born on January 31, 1971 in Washington, D.C. at Providence Hospital to George and Mary Angelopoulos, both of whom preceded him in death.
George attended Riverdale Baptist School from kindergarten to twelfth grade. He also attended Reverend Thomas Daniels Greek Orthodox Parochial School on Saturdays. During his high school years, he was active in the RBS choir. He had a beautiful singing voice and performed and traveled with the choir for concerts and competitions.
In his teen years, he was involved in the church's youth group, ABOVE AND BEYOND TEEN CLUB, under Youth Pastor Ken Mahan and his wife Lorraine, where he participated with the MAGIC team ministry. It was through this ministry that he shared his faith in Christ as he performed. He traveled with the youth group to various cities and states. His favorite time was when they traveled to the Bahamas on a ministry trip. He shared about the various places on the island where they would stay. He particularly enjoyed retelling the story of how frogs would jump up from the drains in the sinks making the girls scream.
During his senior year of high school, he really enjoyed serving as an office aid in the school administration office. He graduated from high school with honors in 1989. He then attended Prince George's Community College as he awaited his acceptance into Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. His heart's desire was to become a commercial pilot. As a little boy he was so fascinated with airplanes, and this was a passion that stayed with him throughout his life. His whole family was beyond thrilled when he was accepted, especially his dad. They traveled down as a family when he was preparing to begin his freshman year. Although he excelled and enjoyed his studies there, unfortunately, due to personal matters, his time there was cut short and he returned home and continued his education at PGCC where he studied Computer Science.
Every summer, for decades, his father would send off him and the family for 2 1/2 to 3 months to Greece to spend time with both sets of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and countless friends. George loved to bike ride with his friends, and every day during those summers he visited his grandfather George's grave and lit his candle. He loved spending time there with his cousins and friends and relaxing at the beach. His last visit to Greece was in 2004 during the summer Olympics which took place in Athens that year. It was his heart's desire to go back soon and see all his cherished family and friends and enjoy his beloved heritage and the unmatched beauty of Greece.
In later years, he enjoyed more local based trips to Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, an area very dear to his mother’s heart as it reminded her of simpler times in Greece. Every trip in recent years had to include a family style breakfast at the Fulton Steamboat Inn, a lunch at Fuddruckers, and a dinner at his favorite Greek restaurant Yorgos in downtown Lancaster. Dessert? He was happy visiting the Turkey Hill Experience and enjoying their ice cream samples, as that was his favorite ice cream (chocolate chip cookie dough). He enjoyed the magic shows at the Magic & Wonder Theater in Paradise and memorable times at the Red Caboose and Barn at Paradise Station with the inspirational Perfect Harmony concerts.
Closer to home in Maryland, he enjoyed visiting Sykesville with his siblings and enjoying meals at his favorite restaurant, E.W. Beck's. For his last birthday this past January, he was so surprised and excited to receive a SugarBakers Smith Island Cake as his birthday cake, his favorite dessert at the restaurant.
George was a die-hard Washington Redskins fan. George now has the best seat in the house to watch the REDSKINS win the Super Bowl this year — Hail! He was also passionate for the Washington Capitals. He and his father and brother Costas would attend many hockey games at the Capital Center. His fondest memory was when he and his father got to fly in the airplane with the team for a Pittsburgh game. Mike Gartner, who was a member of Riverdale Baptist Church, was one of his favorite hockey players.
For many years, he worked so proudly in the family business as his father's bookkeeper. He was very diligent and conscientious in his work. When his father was diagnosed with cancer, George became a caregiver for him. Shortly after his father passed away, his mother faced various health challenges and he then became her full time caregiver for over twenty years. Every Sunday and on holidays, George faithfully and lovingly took his wheelchair bound mother to Saint Theodore where they both attended services. And in the last few years, he lovingly helped his sister as she faced various health challenges.
George will be remembered as the kindest, most sensitive, and gentlest soul one would ever meet. He had a servant's heart. He never said no. He never complained. He always went above and beyond in his devotion to his family. He had a strong faith in Jesus Christ whom he accepted as his personal Savior at the age of five.
His favorite Bible verse was 2 Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
Faithfully every single day on his Instagram page he shared a Bible verse in both English and Greek. This was his way to share the Gospel of Christ and be a spiritual encouragement to others.
He was a longtime member of Riverdale Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, MD (along with the whole family) from early days of the church and school under the leadership at the time of the Rev. Herbert Fitzpatrick and his wife, Lois.
He also was a long time member of St. Theodore Greek Orthodox church in Lanham, MD, under the leadership (at the time) of Father Kostaris, but especially in the latter years when his mother’s chronic pain had worsened and he faithfully took her to services.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, George and Mary, his paternal and maternal grandparents, as well as many cherished relatives.
He is forever in the hearts of his siblings: his older sister Demetra Angelopoulos Brytvych & brother in law, Volodymyr Brytvych, his older brother Costas Angelopoulos; and his baby sister Stavroula Angelopoulos. Also left to cherish his memory are his nephew Denys Brytvych and his wife, Maryna Brytvych and great-nephew Zakhar Brytvych to whom he was affectionately known as “Unkie George.” Also the very dear uncle of his brother Costas’ little dogs, Popeye and his buddy Chanel who would never leave his side.
And across the sea the beloved family he spent his summers with growing up in Greece, Uncle Theodoros and Aunt Fotini Fatouros, along with his cousins Stavroula Fatourou, George Fatouros, Theodore Fatouros, and Uncle Evangelos Fatouros, and many cherished uncles, aunts, and cousins in Greece and in the States. Lastly, but not least, a host of family and friends here and around the world.
- 2 Timothy 4:7-8. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”
– St. Matthew 25:21 “Well done, good and faithful servant…Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
– 2 Corinthians 5:8. “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord"
