Gloria Cynthia Wilson-Swire, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and close friend, left us peacefully at the age of 91 on Sunday March 8, 2026. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion that will be cherished forever.
Gloria was born on June 24,1934 to the late Carl Leslie Euromoss Wilson and Tama Louise Hall-Wilson in Portland, Jamaica. She was the first of their two children, Gloria and Howard. As a daughter of educators, she always made education a top priority and pursued excellence in all areas of her life. Her gentle demeanor and warm smile were her trademarks, and she had an innate ability to make everyone feel at ease. Friends and family will remember her for her unwavering love, patience, and ability to listen without judgment. She found joy in life’s simplest of moments and inspired those around her to approach life with kindness and grace.
As a devoted mother, Gloria raised her children Nadine, Winston (Kirky), and Marlon, with love and wisdom, instilling in them the values of resilience, perseverance, strength, compassion and service. She was immensely proud of her family and often spoke of the joy they brought to her life both in Jamaica and later in the United States.
Her grandchildren, Allyssa, Nikolas, and Kelsey, enjoyed her words of encouragement, caring spirit, and amazing Jamaican cooking. As they grew up, she was always there for them. She would always light up when they came to visit her. They were truly the limelight of her life.
Gloria was a soft-spoken and gentle soul who dedicated over 55 years of her life to the nursing profession. Through her work, she touched countless lives providing care, comfort, and reassurance to her coworkers, patients and their families. She embodied the essence of nurturing and was a beacon of hope for those in need.
In her retirement, Gloria enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, doing word search puzzles, and nourishing her relationship with God. She believed in giving back, and her selfless acts of kindness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Tama Wilson, and her grandmother Marjorie (Ms Maude) Taylor. She is survived by her brother Howard Wilson and his wife Annette Wilson; her children Nadine Jarrett, Winston Swire and Marlon Swire; her son-in-law, Phillip Jarrett, husband of Nadine Jarrett; her daughter-in-law, Nicole Swire, wife of Marlon Swire and Roseann Rutherford, mother of Kelsey Swire; her grandchildren Allyssa Jarrett, Nikolas Jarrett and Kelsey Swire; her nephew and niece Carl Wilson and Anthea Wilson.
Gloria leaves behind a host of extended family, honorary grandchildren, devoted friends and colleagues who were truly blessed by her. Though she may no longer be with us, the spirit of Gloria will forever remain in our hearts. She will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
