Grace-Lyn Azalee Pitter was born on February 20, 1940, in the parish of St. Andrew, Kingston, Jamaica. She was the second of two children born to the late Shadrack and Lilith Simon. Her older sister Majorie (Madge) predeceased her. Raised in a home devoted to serving Jehovah. Grace was taught Bible truths and principles from an early age. She dedicated her life to Jehovah was baptized in 1954 alongside her cousin, Joy Murdock (Willis), and adopted sister, Louise Johnson (deceased).

As a young girl, Grace developed a passion for music which began when her parents gifted her a piano. This sparked a lifelong love for the instrument. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music and continued to share her talent throughout her life, this included playing Kingdom songs at congregation meetings in Jamaica.

Grace received her education at St. Hilda’s Diocesan High School for Girls and later at Wolmer’s High School for Girls in Jamaica, where she also excelled in athletics, participating in field hockey and track. After high school Grace moved to New York and attended business school while living with her beloved Aunt Ownie (deceased). This prepared her to help run the family business Lil’s Furniture store in Jamaica.

It was in New York that Grace met the love of her life, Lloyd Pitter. The two were married on March 2, 1963, in Kingston, Jamaica. Their union was blessed with four children: Leighton, Stewart, Karen, and Arlene. Grace was a loving wife and mother who led by example with warmth, kindness, and steadfast. Lloyd later embraced the truth and was baptized in 1972, serving Jehovah faithfully until his passing in 1996.

In 1977, Grace and her family migrated to the United States, where she worked for Howard University and later the Federal Government – first with Department of Education then with the Department of Agriculture. Upon retirement, Grace remained active and engaged. She taught piano lessons, served as a substitute teacher, joined the gym, traveled extensively, and served as an auxiliary pioneer.

Grace found joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her happiest moments were those surrounded by family, creating lasting memories through love and laughter. Her deep affection for her family was evident in all she did. Even in her later years, as she courageously battled a debilitating illness Grace’s zeal for life and the ministry never waned. She faithfully attended meetings, and assemblies, and engaged in the ministry for as long as her health allowed.

On Saturday, March 29, 2025, Grace fell asleep in death at her home, surrounded by love. She leaves behind her beloved Children: Leighton, Stewart, Karen and Arlene; Grandchildren: Jason (Arlene), Ashleigh (Leighton), Jordanne (Karen), Morgan (Stewart), and Ethan (Karen): and Great-Grandchildren: Jaylen (Jason) and Brooke-Lynn (Ashleigh). She is also survived by many cherished Cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. Her death has ended a wonderful life in dedicated service to Jehovah for which we are truly thankful. Therefore, we apply the sound advice recorded at 1 Thessalonians 4:13, namely: “We do not want you to be ignorant about those who are sleeping in death, so you may not sorrow as the rest do who have no hope”. We are comforted by this hope that sustained her throughout her faithful life and look forward to a great reunion very soon, in the New World of Righteousness.
