Harry Oran Givens, Jr., born on September 8, 1937, in Steubenville, Ohio, and raised in Weirton, West Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on October 25, 2025. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosemarie Givens. They were married August 13, 1960 at Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Weirton, WV., and their three children: Timothy Givens and his wife Patricia of Franklin, Tennessee; Richard Givens and his wife Lauree of Sunset Beach, North Carolina; and Diana Brown and her husband Robert of Parkville, Maryland. Harry was a proud grandfather to Daniel, Sam, Tom, and Nick Givens, whose lives he cherished deeply.
Harry was a proud family man, known for his kind and generous heart. He dedicated over three decades of his life to public service in Industrial Engineering and Sales at the Weirton Steel Company and later serving as the Postmaster in Weirton, West Virginia. He held prominent positions within the United States Postal Service and the Department of the Interior in Washington DC. He excelled as Chief of Labor-Management Relations earning the Meritorious Service Award, the second highest honor within the Department.
Harry’s educational journey began at Cove Elementary and Edgewood Middle Schools, culminating in his graduation from Follansbee High School in 1955. He furthered his studies at West Liberty College, obtaining a B.A. degree in Personnel Management in 1962. This foundation paved the way for his successful career and allowed him to serve his community passionately.
After retiring from federal service in December 1995, Harry devoted much of his time to his faith and community. He was an active member of Ascension Catholic Church in Bowie, Maryland, where he served as a Lector and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. His commitment extended beyond the church; he was involved with the Knights of Columbus and various community clubs, always finding joy in being with others.
A man of faith, Harry exemplified devotion not only to his family but to the Lord, ensuring that his values and beliefs informed his daily actions. He reveled in spending quality time with his family, enjoying outings that included golfing and fishing with his sons and grandsons. Traveling and the camaraderie of meeting new people were also among his cherished pastimes.
He is predeceased by his parents, Harry and Audrey (Parsons) Givens, his sister Jacqueline P. Vacheresse, and his brother James B. Givens. As his family reflects on the profound impact he had on their lives, they take solace in the love and light he has left behind.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 30, 2025 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Beall Funeral Home, 6512 NW Crain Highway Bowie, MD 20715. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Ascension Catholic Church, 12700 Lanham Severn Road Bowie, MD 20720 on Friday, October 31, 2025 at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road Clinton, MD 21035.
In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be made in his name to the Ascension Catholic Church or Shriner's Hospital for Children, ATTN: Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607.
Harry will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and service that will continue to inspire his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The warmth of his character and the depth of his love for family and friends will live on in the countless memories shared.
