Helen Jane (Dailey) Welter, age 86, of Bowie MD, passed peacefully in her home surrounded by family after a 2 year fight with cancer. She was born in June 1939, daughter of Thomas and Kathryn Dailey of Bridgeton NJ.
Helen is survived by her siblings Tom Dailey and Elizabeth Hussain, her children Andrew (Sandra) and Charles (Heather), her beloved granddaughters Hailey and McKenzie, her sister-in-law Becky Welter and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Tommy, her parents, and her husband Charles.
Helen graduated from Glassboro University with a teaching degree, a love of children, and a desire to help others, all of which she put to use throughout her life. After college she taught kindergarten in Rumson New Jersey and started a family with Charlie. In 1975 the family moved to Bowie Maryland. Helen joined Sacred Heart Church and became very involved in multiple good works.
Helen lived her faith in a hands on and tangible way. She was once the head of the Christian Action Committee, the Parish organization in charge of charitable programs. She was head of Sacred Heart’s “House on The Hill”, a one stop shop for all those in need. She cooked, delivered and served meals at S.O.M.E (So Others May Eat). She visited and taught vulnerable adults at the old Glendale hospital. Helen often times brought Glendale patient’s who were alone on the Holidays to our house to celebrate.
Helen loved History. As a member of the Sacred Heart Parish History Committee she helped produce the book “Sacred Heart at Whitemarsh 1741-2015”. After Helen’s own children were grown, she resumed her teaching career as a teachers aid for special needs children at Chapel Forge Special Education school. She was known and respected by the staff as a tireless and knowledgeable asset to the school.
Helen was a life long care giver and role model of her Catholic faith. Helen and Charles served as steady examples of a life well lived, and taught their children the importance of family and service to others. And while we mourn her passing, we rejoice that she will be reunited with her husband Charles and son Tommy.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider a donation to an organization of your choice that serves those in need.
