Listen to Obituary

Hilda Elizabeth (Gosheff) Stinchcomb, 97, a long term resident of Annapolis, passed away peacefully with family.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Hilda was the daughter of the late Steve (Slavko) Gosheff and Hylda (Beck) Gosheff. After her mother's passing in 1934, Hilda was parented by her Aunt Wilhelmina (Minnie) Beck where she lived on a farm in Maryland. Many years later, Hilda's Aunt Minnie married her father.

Hilda attended Davidsonville Elementary School, where her Aunt Alma (King) Beck — the wife of Hylda's twin brother, Henry — taught school. In 1937, Hilda received first Holy Communion at the Holy Family Church, Davidsonville. Later, she returned to Ohio to live with her father. While Hilda lived out of state, she always kept close contact with her family and spent most of her summers visiting with Aunt Minnie.

As a young girl, she attended German school and went on to graduate from Chaney High School, Youngstown in 1946. She was a proud member of the National Honor Society and sang in the glee club. Hilda enjoyed dances, football games, and math. She learned how to drive in her father's Steelton Bakery truck.

After graduating from high school, she moved back with her family to Maryland where she lived in a farm house on Gosheff Lane along with her brothers, Robert and Richard Gosheff and her sister, Mary Lou Pearson. Throughout her life, she maintained close relationships with family and relatives.

In 1951, Hilda married Thomas H. Stinchcomb, Jr. Together, they had five children: Cynthia, Lauren, Sandra, Thomas III, and Gregory. Hilda was a caring and supportive mother. She shared unconditional love with all of her children. She was a true caregiver at heart.

After settling in Annapolis in 1953, Hilda dedicated 38 years of her professional life (1964-2002) to the field of education, serving in a secretarial support role. She started her career at Sunny Acres/Sunny Meadows in Annapolis, moved to Pupil Services at Greene Street, provided support to the Smoking Program and Alternative to Drugs Program at the Learning Center, and supported multiple pupil personnel workers in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. When she retired in 2002 from the Student Services Center, fondly known as Blueberry Hill, Hilda received an AA County Executive Citation and a Governor's Citation in recognition of her years of devoted service to the public school system.

Hilda's life was steeped in faith. As an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis, she served with the Catholic Daughters, was a member of the Bethany Bereavement ministry, the Perpetual Adoration ministry, the Eucharistic ministry, and a perpetual member of the Purgatorian Society.

During her lifetime, she traveled with her sister and other St. Mary's parishioners to Lourdes in France and Fatima in Portugal. Over the years, Hilda participated in numerous catholic retreats and always retained a devout faith in God. Hilda was a member of the Annapolis Moose Lodge.

Outside of work, Hilda's life was rich with purpose and joy. She was an avid gardener who loved to plant and harvest vegetables. She shared a passion for canning tomatoes, green beans, and pickles. While not much of a gambler, Hilda looked forward to entering Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes, waiting for the Prize Patrol, and playing occasional lottery games. She was a dedicated bird watcher, a fierce Yahtzee champion, and a devoted fan of word puzzles, Hallmark movies, The Price is Right, and Let's Make a Deal. She found delight in simple pleasures and loved her morning toast spread with Smucker's apricot preserves.

Hilda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas H. Stinchcomb, Jr.; her son, Thomas H. Stinchcomb III; her parents; her brothers: Robert and Richard Gosheff; and her sister, Mary Lou Pearson. She is survived by her four children: Cyndy Plympton (Selbyville, DE), Lauren Stinchcomb (Annapolis, MD), Sandra Groch (Gambrills, MD), plus Gregory Stinchcomb and his wife, Theresa (Stevensville, MD), all of whom carry forward her legacy of kindness and faith.

During her lifetime, Hilda was blessed with eight grandchildren: Heather Funk (Chris), Lucas Stinchcomb (deceased), Cori Garrett (Jeremy), Frank Speaks (Amanda), Eric Speaks, Katlin Hamm (Russell), Gina Fritz (Tony), and Gabriel Stinchcomb plus six great-grandchildren: Henry Funk, Charlie Funk, Lydia Speaks, Delia Fritz, Aubrie Fritz, and Eisen Fritz.
