In Loving Memory of Howard Percival Johnson Jr.

November 1, 1945 – July 12, 2025

Howard Percival Johnson Jr., known to some as, The Antique Doctor or Outboard Man, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025, at the age of 79, with Cheryl by his side. He leaves behind a legacy of craftsmanship, mechanical knowledge, appreciation for things of the past, and love for family.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl Ann Johnson; his beloved stepdaughters, Angela Miles Gardener and Megan Wharton; and ten wonderful grandchildren: Corey McCarthy, Trevor McCarthy, Hadley Lee, Christian Lee, Cohen Aliff, Chloe Aliff, Jason Gardener, Charlie Gardener, Allison Wharton, and Madison Wharton. Howard also had the joy of welcoming two great-granddaughters into the world: Vivianne McCarthy and Sophia McCarthy.

Howard will be remembered not only for his steady presence and warm heart but also for the love and support he so generously gave to his family. His memory will continue to live on through the lives he touched and the stories that will be told for generations to come.

A respected authority in maritime history, Howard served as the National Historian for Whirlwind Boats. He authored Wild About Whirlwinds and Boats in My Blood, and contributed insightful articles to several boating magazines. His work was featured in respected publications such as PropTalk and The Chesapeake Bay magazine. His famous catamaran building story was published in the paper, and if you didn’t read it there, he was happy to tell you the full story in person.

Howard also curated a private museum—a true reflection of his vibrant personality and interests—featuring a collection of his most treasured memories, including boats, classic cars, vintage radios, toys, and memorabilia. His beloved barn was more than a workspace; it was a gathering place where he joyfully hosted celebrations, often soundtracked by his favorite band, D’Vibe & Conga.

Howard will be remembered for his brilliance, generosity, and the way he brought people together through his stories, projects, and parties. His spirit lives on in the craftsmanship he left behind, the history he preserved, and the love he shared with family and friends.
