Jacob Michael Klingensmith, age 26, of Bowie, Maryland, entered Heaven on September 4, 2026, after his courageous and fierce battle against synovial sarcoma, a rare, aggressive cancer. Through every step of his almost eight-year journey, Jacob faced his illness with the same determination, grit, and fearless spirit he brought to everything else in life.
Born on January 12, 2000, Jacob lived life at full speed. He was a natural athlete who thrived in action, moved fast, and pushed limits. As a baseball player, he excelled behind the plate as catcher, using his leadership and awareness to guide his teammates. When he wasn’t on the diamond, he chased other thrills – pushing his limits on his skateboard at Allen Pond Skatepark or carving down snow-covered mountains on his snowboard. He didn't just love sports; he loved the camaraderie, the outdoor air, and the thrill of the ride. He was also an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jacob had a huge heart, especially towards his animals which he truly considered his children. A devoted, loving dad to his Golden Retriever, Douglas, he personally trained Doug as his service animal. He also loved his two cats, Datsan and Madison, whom provided their own unique entertainment and affection. His ‘kids’ brought him immense joy, comfort, and companionship every single day.
Beyond his athletic talents and love for his pets, Jacob brought an infectious energy to everything in life and was known for his genuine warmth, his loyalty to his family and friends, and a laugh that instantly lit up any room. He loved gathering with his diverse friends at musical festivals. Jacob never let his diagnosis dim his passion for life, continuing to inspire everyone around him with his strength, humor, and positivity during his toughest days.
From a young age, Jacob desired to earn his own way in life starting as a serious negotiator while selling his goods at yard sales, raking leaves, and shoveling snow. He built a diverse and dedicated career, marked by a strong work ethic and a commitment to mastering new skills. He spent meaningful time working at Panera, providing friendly service, and later brought that same dedication to the team at Coal Fire. Driven to build a lifelong career, Jacob went on to complete a rigorous International Association of Heat and Frost Insulation Apprenticeship to become a skilled insulation industry craftsman. He took immense pride in this specialized trade, mastering the complex work of commercial insulation and mechanical systems, and valued the strong bond shared with fellow union members.
Throughout his elementary school years, Jacob actively participated in Master Club at Granite Baptist Church in Glen Burnie. He excelled in Bible memory and regional competitions, earning a wide variety of badges. He applied his athletic ability in crazy relay races and creativity in artwork, puppet shows, race car derbies, and poetry. The lasting friendships he developed proved valuable for encouragement and support during his fiercest battles.
Jacob is survived by his parents, Jennifer and David O’Connor; his brothers, John and Zachary O’Connor; his grandmothers, Jane Klingensmith and Katy Rowe; many aunts and uncles; dozens of cousins; and countless friends who already deeply miss his bright presence.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 10, 2026 from 6-7pm immediately followed by a service to celebrate Jacob’s life at Beall Funeral Home, located at 6512 Crain Highway, Bowie, MD. Interment will be at a later date at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville, MD.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jacob’s memory to the Sarcoma Foundation of America which is dedicated to research for treatment and cure of Jacob’s rare, aggressive cancer.
