James M. Morrissey

James Michael Morrissey passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, surrounded by his children. Jim was a proud United States Marine Corps Sergeant, accomplished attorney, devoted father and grandfather, beloved brother and uncle, faithful companion, and, above all, a gregarious Irishman who never met a stranger.

Born on March 1, 1947, in Boston, Massachusetts, to James and Rose Morrissey, Jim was the oldest of six children and grew up surrounded by a large and loving family. The family moved to Washington, D.C. when he was a child and ultimately settled in Bowie, Maryland.

Jim proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, a commitment that reflected the strength, discipline, and loyalty that would define so much of his life. After his military service, he attended the University of Maryland and graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law. Once he finished law school, Jim moved back to Bowie to practice law. With a loan from his parents, he started his own law firm. Ultimately, all three of his brothers became his law partners, and the firm became Morrissey Brothers, P.C., combining his professional life with the people who had been by his side since childhood. He practiced law for 40 years, always willing to help anyone who needed him.

Outside of work, Jim found some of his greatest happiness in the things he loved most—being on the water, traveling, and cheering on his Washington Redskins. He loved fishing and treasured the time spent outdoors, away from the demands of everyday life. Fishing was more than a pastime for him—it was a source of peace, enjoyment, and memories shared with family and friends. And when he wasn't fishing, you could almost always find Jim talking about the Redskins (mostly complaining!). He never missed a game and was a loyal fan through every season, always ready to cheer them on.

Once retired from practicing law, Jim was always on the road looking for another adventure. He traveled extensively throughout the world and enjoyed “wintering” in South Florida.

Family was the center of Jim's world. He shared an especially close bond with his three brothers and two sisters, a relationship built on lifelong love, loyalty, and friendship. Known affectionately as “Puppa” by his grandchildren, Jim treasured every moment with them and loved cheering them on at sporting events, dance recitals, and music performances. He was a constant presence in their lives and will be profoundly missed.

Beyond his family, Jim's circle of friends was simply too large to count. He was the life of the party and always an instant friend to anyone he met.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, James and Rose, and his brother, Robert J. Morrissey. He is survived by his children, Christie Stute (Tim), James M. Morrissey Jr. (Frances), and Caitlin Morrissey; his four grandchildren, Sophie, Spencer, and Mia Stute and Violet Morrissey; his siblings, Paul D. Morrissey (AJ), Jean M. Orzech (Tom), Anne Greco Morrissey (Rosemarie), and John P. Morrissey (Kris) his longtime companion Sandy Payne; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Jim will be remembered for his stories, his laughter, his generosity, and his larger-than-life spirit. He leaves behind a family and countless friends who were made better for having known him.
