James Carroll White, born December 27, 1934 in Brandy Station of Culpeper, Virginia to the late Leo White and Mary Frances Mack. At a very young age, James lost his mother and baby brother during child-birth and was raised by his grandmother, Katherine “Kate” Mack. Growing up, he looked up to his uncle, John H. Mack (better known as Uncle Johnny) who was like a big brother. James graduated from George Washington Carver Regional High School, Class of 1952.
James set out to make a life for himself in Washington, DC. His career included time with the United States Government Printing Office, the United States Department of Treasury, Georgetown Hospital, and the Department of Housing and Community Development, known today as the District of Columbia Housing Authority. During his career, James also made time to serve his country with the United States Armed Forces, Navy Branch, from July 1955 until December 1959. James was honorably discharged and transferred to the Navy Reserve where he served from December 1959 to July 1963. James retired from the District of Columbia Housing Authority.
In 1960, James met a “young tenderoni” named Geneva, in Washington, DC. The two became one in December 1962, shared a union of 59 years, and from that union four children were born: Debra, Andre, Timothy, and Rolanda. James enjoyed spending his free time painting, traveling with his family, and attending various events as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7284, James Reese Europe American Legion Post 5, and Military Order of the Cootie.
James, affectionately called “Carroll” amongst family and friends, was the life of the party. He loved to dance and was light on his feet. He enjoyed the company of others and never met a stranger. “Carroll” could fill a room with laughter.
On February 17, 2022, James Carroll White was called home while admitted in Washington Hospital Center (Washington, DC), with his granddaughter “Tae” by his side.
