Johann Miller Powell

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Johann M. Powell, on August 2, 2026 at the age of 93.

Johann was born on September 28, 1932 to the late Vernon and Alice Groff. She was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but while vacationing at Holloway Beach near Aberdeen, MD, she met a dashing young military man named Russell Powell. They were married on December 7th, 1952 and together, they decided to settle and raise their children in Seabrook, MD. They were always quick to remind you how blessed they were with their 3 children, 4 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 66 wonderful years of marriage.

Johann will be remembered as someone you could always count on to make you smile. Whether with her typical, unknown antics, a warm cup of coffee, or her sincere conversation, you always knew that you were welcome with Johann.

She will also be remembered as someone who never slowed down. Despite her age, Johann could routinely be seen chasing her daughter around a thrift store or doing her “classes”, as she called them, at the senior center.

Johann was preceded in death by her five siblings: Patricia Miller, Jim Miller, her twin brother - Jerry Miller, Vernon “Buddy” Groff Jr., and Galen Groff. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Russell Powell, her son, Wendell Powell, and her daughter-in-law, Sheri Powell. She is survived by her son, Randy Powell, her daughter, Belinda Shontere (Steve Welch), her daughter-in-law, Michele Powell, 4 grandchildren; Valerie (husband, Terry), Jason (wife, Kylie), Alexis (husband, Jon) and Libby, and 3 great-grandchildren; Shawn, Jacob, and Ben.

Services will be held at the following dates and times:

A viewing will be held Friday, August 21st, 2026 from 6PM-8PM at Beall Funeral Home at 6512 Crain Hwy, Bowie, MD 20715.

A funeral service will be held August 22nd, 2026 starting at 11AM at Grace Bible Church at 9920 Lanham Severn Rd, Lanham, MD 20706.

A private burial will take place at a later date.
