A Celebration of Life
John Patrick Chaney, Sr.
John Patrick Chaney, Sr., a beloved father, husband, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29th 2026. He was born on March 16, 1964 in Omaha, Nebraska, to Omega Elizabeth Chaney and Samuel Chaney, Sr., and was raised in Lanham, Maryland.
John was a proud product of Prince George’s County Public Schools, attending James McHenry Elementary, Thomas Johnson Junior High, and Eleanor Roosevelt High School. As a young man, he was an athlete who loved boxing, football, and competing with rival neighborhoods (Whitfield v. Glenarden), (Whitfield v. Carsondale), (Whitfield v. Lanham Station Road), and the list goes on. In spite of these neighborhood sports rivals, John’s lifelong closest friends came from Whitfield, Carsondale, Glenarden and Lanham Station Road! John’s favorite card game was spades which his mother Meg taught all her kids to play at an early age. She taught them how to run a Boston, bid a 10 for 2 and Play to Win.
After graduating high school, John dedicated three years of service to the United States Army, where he served as a petroleum supply specialist. It was during this time that he discovered the profession that would shape the rest of his working life. On October 5, 1985, John married Stacey Marie Moore, and from this union came five beautiful children. John “Boo” Patrick Chaney, Jr. (Esmeralda); Latisha Shanta Chaney; Amber Nicole Chaney; Brianna Elizabeth Chaney; and bonus daughter Phyllis Charity Hewett. His final, his youngest child, Isaiah Chaney, whom he shared with Lisa West. John lived in Eureka, California for 20 years, becoming a familiar and well-loved presence in the community. Following his military service, John worked for the City of Eureka and coached basketball before beginning his long career in aviation fueling.
After returning to Maryland, he went on to spend more than 18 years with Menzies Aviation at BWI Airport, where he was known for his hard work, loyalty, and the deep bonds he formed with his coworkers—his “second family.” In fact, his Ops Manager Phyllis, Mary, and his supervisor Meek said, “John was well-loved by his team and everybody at the airport.”
John attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Glen Burnie, Maryland where he built meaningful and lasting friendships with Matthew and Beatrice Hicks, Raymond Jackson and so many more in the congregation that helped him to become rooted in his faith. Above all, he taught his children that Jehovah comes first.
John was a man of many passions. He loved music, dancing, and being the life of the party. One of his favorite artists was Michael Jackson, which his youngest son continues to entertain the family as he mimics the moves to Smooth Criminal and so many more. John was also a devoted Washington Redskins/Commanders fan, he proudly displayed his team spirit no matter where he lived—even keeping a Redskins flag on his wall in California. His favorite colors were of course Burgundy and Gold which he got from his mother who purchased her first colored TV from Mongomery Wards to see the Miami Dolphins v. the Redskins in the 1974 Superbowl. And, if you ever spoke with him for more than a few minutes, you likely heard why The Shawshank Redemption was his all-time favorite movie. His best friends were Calvin Boone, Deneal Brown, Zack Rukavina, Mike Massey, and Earl Beard
To those who knew him, John was the ultimate storyteller. His childhood memories, told with humor and vivid detail, could fill any room with laughter. Recently while he was with his family, he told stories about his elementary school teacher Ms. Finkel and how the entire class had to write 100 times “I WILL NOT TALK IN MS. FINKEL’S CLASS” …which we still wonder to this day how he remembered every single detail. He cherished his family deeply and especially loved spending time with loved ones, talking sports, sharing meals, and enjoying the simple moments that meant the most.
John is survived by his wife, Stacey Marie Chaney (Moore); He was the proud “Pop-Pop” to six grandchildren: Aaliyah, Genaveve, Neveah, John III, Princess, and Johnathan. He also leaves behind his devoted siblings: Karen Loretta Chaney Ellis (Keith), Samuel “Skip” Chaney, Jr. (Elaine), Teressa Ann Chaney Jones, James “Jimmy” Chaney, Sr. (Gina), Mark Vincent Chaney (Elisha), Maria “PD” Knott, his stepmother, Rosa Chaney and a host of nieces and nephews.
John’s warmth, humor, and unforgettable stories will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His five siblings feel like the six pack is broken for now but soon look forward to the Bible’s promise at John 5:28,29 where they look forward to seeing him again right here on earth.
Gone but NEVER forgotten. His memory lives on.
