It is with tremendous sadness that we share the passing of John “Jack” Fraser Craig, who passed away peacefully at his home on September 26, 2026, surrounded by his family. Jack was born in the Bronx, New York in 1933 to his parents, John and Mary. He grew up in New York and Pennsylvania along with his younger sister, Ellie, with whom he remained close his entire life. He moved to Bowie in 1966, where he lived until his death.
Jack graduated from St. Bonaventure University in upstate New York where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics. While at St. Bonaventure, he played drums in the marching band and was in the U.S. Army ROTC program. After he graduated, he served as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Army for two years and then as an officer in the U.S. Army Reserves for an additional 26 years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Following his honorable discharge from active duty, Jack worked in sales for a variety of companies, a job that perfectly suited his outgoing personality. He last worked as a life insurance agent with the Knights of Columbus, where he assisted his brother Knights and their families with their insurance needs. He retired in 2003.
Beyond his professional life, Jack loved to spend time with people in his community. He was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Bowie, where he served as an usher for 50 years. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing golf and socializing with his friends, and was frequently in attendance for lunches with his fellow retired Knights on Thursday afternoons. On hot summer days, he would often be found at his neighborhood pool enjoying a cold beer with his pals. Jack also was proud of his Irish heritage and was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a fraternal organization for Irish-Catholics.
But what Jack loved most in life was his family. He was a beloved husband to Sharon Craig, and a devoted father to John (Cathy), Kevin (Caryn) and Brian (Elisabeth). He was also a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He loved attending their games and other activities. They were a constant source of pride and joy in his life and the love they shared for him was just as special.
Jack is survived by his wife of 64 years, his three children, nine grandchildren (Moira, Johnny, Ryan, Mackenzie, Patrick, Gavin, Domenic, Charlie, and Mia), and two great-grandchildren (Ricky and Sienna), as well as his sister Ellie Mooney and his 11 nieces and nephews.
Jack will be deeply missed by his family and all of those who had the privilege of spending time with him. May he rest in peace knowing that he will live on forever in the hearts and minds of the people he loved and those who loved him dearly.
