Listen to Obituary

John William McGowan (Johnny), 63, passed peacefully in his sleep on June 17, 2026, into the loving arms of our Almighty Father in heaven.

John was the beloved husband of Sheri McGowan and proud father of his greatest achievement, Collin McGowan. He is also survived by his siblings: Marianne Hamerski (Tom), Susie Prin (Richard), and Michael McGowan (Denise), along with many well loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and countless friends who became family.

He also leaves behind his faithful dogs, Oden and Grace, who were his constant companions and brought him endless comfort.John embraced life with enthusiasm and imagination. He loved coaching baseball, camping, hiking, fishing, surfing, woodworking, and any excuse to gather family and friends for an adventure. Holidays often included laughter, practical jokes, and unforgettable memories. He looked forward to the get togethers and reminded us that joy is something we choose, even when life is difficult.

His family finds comfort knowing he is now free from pain, reunited with loved ones who have gone before him, and completely enjoying all the nature, games, and parties heaven has to offer.

A celebration of John's life will be held at Holy Redeemer Church (9705 Summit Avenue, Kensington, Maryland) at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, please perform an unexpected act of kindness, reach out to someone who may need encouragement, or simply make time for the people you love in honor of Johnny. That would make him smile.
