Judith “Judy” Kaye Simpson (LaGue), age 79, of Crofton, Maryland, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on February 20, 2026.
Born on October 6, 1946, in Washington, DC, Judy was the beloved daughter of the late William and Vera LaGue. Judy was a lifelong resident of Maryland, having raised her family in Greenbelt and then later moving to Crofton for her later years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend whose warmth and steady presence touched all who knew her.
Judy is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Thomas Francis Simpson. She was a proud and devoted mother to Patricia Fato (John), Mary Leizear (Robert), Kelly Weiss (Michael), and Thomas Simpson. She was a cherished grandmother to Jacob Leizear, Matthew Leizear, Julia Fato, Sarah Nalley (Christopher), Jack Weiss, John Fato, Stella Weiss, Aidan Weiss, Piper Simpson, and Hope Simpson. She is also survived by her sisters, Carol Fox, Susan Humphries, and Teresa Johnson. Judy was affectionately known as Mom, Mee Maw, Grandma, and Maw Maw to those close to her.
Judy dedicated over 40 years of her professional life to working as a legal assistant. She also generously volunteered at Anne Arundel Medical Center for more than 10 years, where she truly valued her interactions with patients and staff. Upon fully retiring in 2020, she embraced the opportunity to spend more time with her family and pursue her many interests.
Judy had a variety of passions and hobbies in her life. She was an avid reader, sewer, baker, cook, and crafter, and loved spending time at the Bowie Senior Center. She especially loved birdwatching and took great care to ensure the wild birds around her home were well fed, particularly during the winter months. She had a deep love for dogs and was the devoted owner of many beloved pets throughout her life. Judy was also a fervent baseball fan, and always made sure to support the Washington Nationals when she could. Her home was always filled with warmth and often the happy presence of a cherished dog. Her strength, resilient spirit, and steadfast love will remain her lasting legacy.
A faithful member of Sacred Heart Church for the past 27 years, Judy’s faith was a guiding force in her life and the foundation of her devotion to family and community.
In 2013, Judy received the extraordinary gift of life through a kidney donation from her son-in-law, Michael Weiss. His selfless act extended her life and blessed their family with many more treasured years together. Donations may be made in memory of Michael’s gift to Judy to the National Kidney Foundation.
