In Loving Memory of Lowell Freeman Hawkins
A Life of Dedication, Integrity, and Kindness
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lowell Hawkins, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, who left us peacefully on November 25, 2025, in Upper Marlboro, Maryla surrounded by loved ones such as his beloved wife Sharon, his grandson Jeffery, and his home health aide nurse Tekia who has also became like a daughter. Lowell’s departure marks the end of an era for those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his legacy will continue to echo in the hearts of family, friends, and the community he so dearly cherished.
Early Life and Education
Lowell Hawkins born in Toledo, Ohio where he learned the values of honesty, hard work, and compassion from an early age. Growing up in a close-knit family, Lowell demonstrated natural curiosity and a keen intellect that would guide him throughout his life. He met his wife Sharon (Smith) at the time, in high school. After graduation, he attended Bowling Green State University, majoring in Accounting and Finance, graduating in 1965 when he was commissioned as a second Lieutenant into the Air Force.
Career and Professional Achievements
Lowell dedicated his professional life to making a positive impact in his field. Known for his integrity and unwavering commitment to excellence, he became a respected figure among colleagues and clients alike. His career was marked by notable accomplishments and a reputation for reliability, professionalism, and visionary leadership. Lowell’s contributions to his profession will be remembered as a testament to his work ethic and his desire to serve others. Highlights in his career came about when he was stationed in Japan and Okinawa. He enjoyed his work at the Pentagon. In June 1987, after 22 years he retired from the Air Force at Offut AFB, Nebraska, where he was stationed at HQ SAC, specializing in forecasting and budgeting.
After his retirement he returned to college, earning his master’s degree and Ph.D. in Healthcare Education. His first position was opening Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. As Executive Director of the Hall he was loved and respected amongst all the residents. Moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota he established another new retirement center. After this new venture he became a nursing home consultant, starting his own independent business called Horizon Healthcare Consulting.
Family and Personal Life
Above all, Lowell was a devoted family man. He married his lifelong partner, with whom he shared 61 years of love, laughter, and partnership. Together, they raised a family that became the center of Lowell’s world. He survived by his oldest son Daniel and his wife Sue, grandson Jeffery and wife Lisa, grandson Matthew, and lastly his great grandchildren Lucas and Remi. Preceding him in death was his younger son Stephen. Accompanied by Lowell throughout his growth of life was his brothers Harold and Neil, and his sister Beverly. He enjoyed family vacations with his nieces and nephews as well. He was a nurturing father, always present for his children’s milestones and a constant source of encouragement and wisdom. Lowell’s grandchildren brought him immense joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them, passing down traditions and stories that will be treasured for generations.
Community Involvement
Lowell was deeply dedicated to his Christian community, volunteering his time and resources to causes close to his heart. Serving as Elder and trustee, a lay leader, and Sunday School teacher as well as participating in prison Fellowship. His generosity and kindness touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impression on many who met him. Lowell always had such a goofy sense of nature to him which left those whom he came across full of laughter and a joyous feeling. Lowell believed in the power of community and the importance of supporting others, a philosophy he lived out each day.
Legacy and Remembrance
Those who knew Lowell will remember him for his firm belief in the prayer in God, his spiritual foundation, gentle spirit, wise counsel, and unwavering support. He was a man of principle, whose actions spoke louder than words. Lowell’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, and compassion—a guiding light for all who strive to make the world a better place. Lowell is survived by his devoted wife, loving children, cherished grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends who mourn his loss and celebrate his remarkable life. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons taught, and the lives touched by his kindness. He leaves us with his favorite Bible verse Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly[a] with your God.”
Visitation will be held on Friday December 12th, 2025 from 2pm-4pm at Beall Funeral home in Bowie, MD and Saturday from 10-11 December 13th,2025 At St Paul’s Moravian Church. There will be visitation followed by his farewell services at 11.
