In Loving Memory of
Margaret Marie Bassett
May 21, 1931 – October 29, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our mom, Margaret Marie Bassett. Fondly known as Marie, Mom, Maw Maw, and occasionally, when necessary, “the Boss”, she leaves behind a lifetime of memories and an immeasurable impact on those who knew and loved her.
She was the daughter of Edith Walker and Jimmy Humphrey. Leaving home at an early age, she began supporting herself through various jobs. One of our favorite stories is from her time working at the Vanilla Wafer factory.
She married the love of her life, Lonnie Albert Bassett, and together they built a life and raised a family. She loved traveling with Lonnie on his many business trips and continued traveling with family after his passing in 1989. From an early age, she carried a determination deep within her to prove the doubters wrong. She was determined to show that she was capable, worthy, and able to make something of herself. And she did just that. Her life became her answer.
Though her outward appearance was quiet and shy, underneath was a woman who possessed great strength, wisdom, compassion, generosity, and the heart of a valiant fighter and warrior when needed. She lived independently in her home until she was 93.
Throughout her 95 years, she endured many of life's traumas and dramas, including the Great Depression, four wars, the loss of her husband, a heart attack, a stroke, and knee replacement surgery at age 80. Through it all, she demonstrated a strength and resilience that will forever be admired.
She was a creative seamstress, making prom dresses, Halloween costumes, and beautiful outfits for business events. We still possess many of her creations. She was talented in drawing and handy with a tool, fixing things around the house or wherever needed. She enjoyed bowling, golf, and fishing and as quite good at all, beating most of her opponents.
She was also known for her green thumb and her ability to grow just about anything. Her gardens were famous, producing black-eyed peas and corn, among other treasures. Her homegrown corn became the much-sought-after creamed corn that neighbors and friends eagerly anticipated. She always made extra so she could share with anyone who asked. Her Southern cooking could not be matched. Her gumbo, chicken and dumplings, her version of Brunswick stew, and biscuit turnovers are a legacy passed down through the generations for all who were fortunate enough to enjoy them.
Mom, there is no one who could ever hold a candle to you. You are a superstar and a hero in every way to us. You are irreplaceable, and you have made your mark on us and on the world. You are victorious in life and in death.
You lived quietly and simply, demanding nothing from anyone, but always giving your all to everyone.
You lived with grace and Southern charm all the days of your life, and you will be deeply missed forever.
