Mary Elizabeth Hazell

June 27, 1930 — July 2, 2021

Mary Elizabeth Hazell, 91 of Bowie, Maryland passed away peacefully on July 2, 2021 at Bowie Assisted Living.

Mary is survived by her children Christine of Edgewater, MD, Robert (Ami) of Lothian, MD, and Grace (Bob) of Chandler, AZ.  She is predeceased by her husband Jack, her mother Grace Bradford, her father Daniel Bradford, her half-brother Harold Bradford, and her half-sister Evelyn Bradford.

Mary was born on June 27, 1930 in Farmville, VA to Daniel and Grace Bradford. The family moved to Manassas Virginia where Mary was raised becoming an Honor Queen of Jobs Daughters, working as a basketball statistician gaining an athletic letter, and graduating from high school with typing and shorthand skills.

After graduating high school in Manassas, VA, she went to work for the Federal government at the Bureau of Labor and Statics in Washington, DC.  It was there where a work friend  introduced her to her future husband John (Jack) Hazell.  They were married in 1957.

Mary and her husband began their marriage and had their first child, Christine while living in Washington DC.  As the family expanded, they moved to Suitland MD where Robert and Grace were born.  In 1971, the family moved to Bowie MD where Mary raised her children and lived out her life as an active member of the community.

Mary was a devoted mother, daughter and friend to others.  Mary took care of her mother until her passing. She was an avid sports mom, driving her children to practices and attending as many soccer, basketball and softball/baseball games as possible to show unconditional support to her children. Mary was also active with her children’s  schooling including chaperoning field trips, being a room mother, and helping with homework and school projects.

Mary was an avid crafter, always trying new things. She enjoyed anything from crocheting to rug art or just something new she saw at a craft fair.  Many of those that she knew and loved have some of her crafts as treasured memories.  She also was a very good cook, making homemade meals and desserts daily. She was an excellent baker and each year at Christmas made an amazing cookie tray that included homemade crab dip and cheeseballs for all her neighbors.

Mary was a spiritual woman that was involved in many church activities including teaching Sunday school, vacation bible school, lunches, church trips, and even assisting elderly friends with getting to church.

She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all that knew her.
