Mercina Karagiorgis

January 23, 1933 — May 6, 2025

Potomac Falls, VA

Mercina, was born on January 23, 1933 in Agrinio, Greece to Nicolaos and Eleni Thomaidis. One of 3 girls (Kiki and Ariadne) and 4 brothers (Makis, Panagiotis, Adonis and Geórgios), she was adored and doted on by her loving parents and siblings from the moment she entered this world. From early on she had a gift of determination and strength of spirit that would remain with her throughout her entire life.

Mercina apprenticed under a master seamstress after high school and became a talented seamstress and designer herself. After meeting her beloved husband Demetrios E. Karagiorgis in 1956 and getting married on May 5th, 1957 she moved to America in hopes of creating a family.

Her roles as a wife, mother and later on as grandmother would be the most important in her lifetime. Her eternal love for her husband Demetri and her beloved sons Angelo, Nick, Billy and Alex knew no bounds. Mercina’s relationship with her boys was stern but gentle, strict but forgiving, demanding and yet empathetic. She often had individual conversations with her sons offering her sage advice and experiences. Each one of her daughter- in- laws (Carol, Debbie, Eva, Dawn and Sally) would describe her as wise, kind, helpful, fun and loving. She was fortunate to witness the birth of her eight grandchildren (Kristina, Areanna, Nicole, Demetri, Sid, Niko, Hailey and Dylan) and helped to instill her beliefs and values for the next generation.

The role of matriarch brought her boundless joy and unspeakable heartache. A woman of deep faith, Mercina often shared with people how her strong belief in God helped her during the most difficult times in her life especially after the sudden loss of her beloved son, Nick (1998), her husband Demetri (2000) and daughter in law Carol (2010).

While she passed at the age of 92 she will always be remembered for her joke that she never was older than 39. She was wise and empathetic, she always gave the most sage and nonjudgmental advice to those around her. She imparted her wisdom on all of her loved ones even until the moment of her death making sure she told them stories of her life, gave them guidance and most importantly telling them how much she loved them until the end. She will be missed by so many here on earth but we are all confident that she will be greeted and embraced by our Lord and all of her loved ones that preceded her in death.

Services in honor of Mercina will be held on Tuesday May 13, 2025 from 11-12 viewing and followed by the funeral Service at 12pm at St. Theodore’s Greek Orthodox Church, Lanham MD.
