May 11, 1950 – February 13, 2026
Michael Patrick Benton was born to Paddy and Mary Benton in Washington, D.C. He attended St. Ambrose Elementary School, Archbishop Carroll High School, and Bowie State University before proudly serving in the United States Navy.
Michael devoted his entire life to the well-being of his family. By the age of 25, after the passing of both of his parents, he lovingly stepped into a parental role for his three younger brothers—Patrick, Kevin, and Brian—guiding and caring for them with strength and compassion.
In July 1976, Michael began his own family when he married Darla Cofer. Together they shared four children: Amy, Erin, Brendan, and Sean. He was the proud and adoring “Pop Pop” (and jokingly, “Papaprika!”) to his seven beloved grandchildren: Selah, Majid, Hopi, Fiona, Feilim, Willem and Keeva.
For over 50 years, Michael was a devoted parishioner of St. Ambrose Catholic Church. He was a decades-long member of the church choir and the Men’s Club, forming friendships and serving his faith community with joy and dedication.
A longtime resident of Cheverly, Maryland, for more than 40 years, Michael built both a career and a reputation for integrity and hard work. He worked professionally as a mortgage officer while also holding a second job on Sundays as a proud member of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union, from which he later retired.
Michael loved without judgment and gave freely of himself, often putting others’ needs before his own comfort. He had an adventurous spirit and a vibrant personality. He enjoyed playing pool at Moni’s in Crofton, playing tennis with neighbors in Cheverly, riding motorcycles, spending time at the beach, soaking up the sun, and sailing with his dear friend Pete. Quick with a song and always ready to dance, Michael was truly the life of the party. His vintage Mercedes-Benz, affectionately known as the “Soulman Mobile,” was legendary among family and friends.
He is survived by his brothers Patrick and Brian Benton, nephews Liam, Brendan, Griffin, Aidan & Patrick and niece, Abby. His sisters- in law- Cheryl, Donna & Patrice and decades long friend Pamela Wilson .
As the foundational patriarch of the Benton family for two generations, Michael’s strength, generosity, humor, and unwavering love shaped the lives of all who knew him. In his final years, he continued to live selflessly, caring for others just as he had done throughout his life.
Although his earthly departure was shockingly sudden, he will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
