Michael Joseph Marshall, Mike, Mickey, Dad, or Pop Pop to those who loved him, was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey to Elizabeth (Bolf) and George “Duke” Marshall. Growing up at the beach he spent many days body surfing and had some of his earliest jobs selling ice cream on the beach, working in his uncle’s store, and working as a hotel waiter. He was raised Catholic, served as an altar boy at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church and attended Holy Spirit High School where he was on the football team and the track team. As a member of the track team, he set the record for the 100-yard dash, which still stands today. He went on to attend LaSalle College in Philadelphia. Upon graduation, he commissioned as an active-duty U.S. Army Officer. He retired from military service as a First Lieutenant and went to work for the U. S. Government. While on an assignment in Pittsburgh, he met Dorothy Yachup. They were married in Pleasantville, New Jersey and honeymooned in Hawaii. Over the next few years his employment as an auditor with the Department of Agriculture took them to Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Iowa, back to Pennsylvania, and one last move to Bowie, Maryland. He retired from the Office of the Inspector General after 34 years of service to the U. S. Government. Mike then went to work as a financial advisor at Widmann Financial Services with his son-in-law Art. Using his analytical and problem-solving skills, he spent 30 years there helping people navigate financial challenges, provide education for their children, and plan for their retirement.
Mike found great joy in the simple things in life: the beach, spending time with family, going to the casino, and playing board games and cards. He was highly competitive and made his opponents earn every victory, regardless of their age. His family will always remember the laughter, determination, and friendly rivalry that came with playing against him. Mike was known for his endless supply of “Pop Pop jokes.” He had a way of making people laugh, whether he meant to or not, and those jokes will be retold for years to come.
Mike and Dorothy were blessed with three children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by; daughters, Marianna Widmann (Art), and Barbara Ross (Art); son, Michael Marshall (Melissa); grandchildren, Steven Widmann (Brooke), Andrew Widmann (Sophie), Angela & Victoria Ross, Abigail, Claire, & Leah Marshall; great-grandchildren, Steven II, Juniper, and Michael. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy in 2019.
Mike lived a life worth telling stories about. His was a life of faith, family, intelligence, laughter, competition, and countless memories. Those who loved him will continue to tell his stories, share his lessons, laugh at his jokes, remember his victories, and carry his legacy forward. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
May he rest in eternal peace.
