We regret to announce the passing of Philip E. Whalen, 72, of Washington D.C. on April 7th. Phil passed from natural causes while surrounded by his children Wesley “Chris” Whalen and Melissa Whalen Philippe.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents Walter E. Whalen Jr.& Lily M. Whalen, brother Russell Chappell and his wife Mary F. R. Whalen. He is survived by his sister Myrtis Ann Whalen, children Chris and Melissa, step-son John L. (Mary Beth) Powers and grandchildren James and Stephanie Powers and Cassidy Whalen along with nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Phil is a Veteran of the Vietnam War and Desert Storm. For his service he has earned many awards, commendations and two Purple Hearts. He served honorably in the Navy in various capacities during his 30 year service, achieving the rank of Senior Chief. He enlisted at the age of 18 and while still a senior in high school, following in the footsteps of his father. After graduating from DuVal High School in 1969, he attended basic training and completed 3 tours in Vietnam during active duty and 2 tours in Desert Storm while in the Naval Reserves.
Born and raised in Washington DC, he lived most of his life in MD. An avid athlete in high school, he continued life enjoying golf, bowling, softball and had a passion for vintage cars. Phil lived life to the fullest, would do anything for his friends and family. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Philip Whalen’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project. Viewing will be held Friday April 14th from 2-4pm with services and burial on Saturday April 15th at 10am.
