Regina G. Smigielski, age 93, peacefully passed from this world to her eternal home on January 3, 2023. Regina was born on December 27, 1929, in Buffalo, New York, to Herman and Antoinette Gutowski. The youngest of eight children, she is better known by her nickname Renee. She graduated from Riverside High School in 1947. On August 29, 1953, Renee married Frank J. Smigielski and together they raise seven children. Frank and Renee moved from Buffalo to Alexandria, Virginia; Salisbury, Maryland and then settled in Bowie, Maryland while Frank worked for the National Weather Bureau under NOAA.
Renee stayed at home raising their children until 1978 when she returned to work as a typist/secretary for the Internal Revenue Service. She retired from the IRS in 1993 and began working for NAM. Renee enjoyed traveling around the world with Frank and later with her children after Frank passed away in December 1994.
Renee was a devout Catholic who made Sacred Heart Church her home parish. She sang in the choir for over 40 years and was a member of the Sacred Heart Ladies Sodality. Renee was an outstanding cook and baker, and an excellent seamstress who enjoyed all arts and craft projects. Most of all, Renee took pride in loving her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Renee is preceded in death by her husband, Frank, seven siblings, and two children – Barbara A. Martoncik (date of death: April 24, 2008) and Michael F. Smigielski (date of death: October 24, 2015).
Renee is survived by five daughters Susan (Brian) Curran, Mary (Julius) Funk, Patty (Lee) Veri, Margaret Smigielski, and Teresa (Chris) McGinnis; one daughter-in-law, Patty Smigielski; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Also, Renee is survived by a sister-in-law, Colleen Smigielski, and numerous nieces and nephews.
