Richard Daniel Childs

July 5, 1947 — August 24, 2025

Crofton, MD

Richard (Rick) Daniel Childs died on August 24, 2025 after a valiant twenty-month fight against pancreatic cancer. Rick was born on July 5, 1947 in Prince Georges County, Maryland and spent his formative years in that County. From an early age Rick worked at various jobs until an older contractor recognized Rick’s innate great ability, work ethic and character and recruited Rick to help him. Rick worked in construction for a number of years mastering skills that he used for the balance of his life. Rick married into a railroad family and his father-in-law, John McPhearson, urged him to pursue a career in that industry, which he did, becoming employed by Amtrak in 1974. Rick worked for Amtrak until his retirement in 2007 in several capacities of increasing responsibility as his career advanced. His last position was as the manager of the MARC commuter maintenance division.

In retirement, Rick put his woodworking skills to work at Annapolis Maritime Antiques making many types of items from wood and fabricating specialty items and furniture from salvaged maritime artifacts. But, his last and favorite job, was as an Anne Arundel County school crossing guard which allowed him to interact with the younger school kids, while making sure they arrived safely home. He became a school favorite and the sentiment was returned.

Rick loved motorcycles, working in his yard, the history of the Alamo, all things Elvis and marrying his displaced Texan wife, Linda.

Rick was a member of Nichols Bethel United Methodist Church where he served as an usher, the Thursday Men’s Club and on various other committees. He also served as a member of the Architectural Design committee of his homeowners’ association.

Rick is survived by his wife, Linda; children: John ( Jennifer), Richard, Julie ; stepdaughter Kim Johnson (Deke) and grandchildren; Victoria Childs, John Martin Childs, Larkin Childs, Saunder Childs, Lillie Johnson, Annabel Johnson and Jane Childs. He is also survived by his siblings Sonny (Janet), Debbie (Buddy), Mac (Peggy), Blair, Pam, Louie (Betty Ann), and Peggie (Jeff). He was predeceased by his younger brother, Owen.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 3 at 11:00 at Nichols Bethel Church, 1239 Murray Avenue, Odenton, MD. Burial will be private. Luncheon will be served at the church following the service. Arrangements made through Beall Funeral Home.
