Richard “Dick” Kane

January 5, 1939 – October 31, 2025

Richard “Dick” Kane, a devoted family man, storyteller, and lifelong Washingtonian, passed away on October 31, 2025.

Born on January 5, 1939, to Mary and Ed Kane, Dick grew up on 13th Place NE in Washington, D.C., alongside his siblings, Mary Ann and Edward. He attended the Campus School at Catholic University, St. John’s High School, and later the University of Maryland. After high school, he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960 as a photo-intelligence officer, a role he carried with quiet pride throughout his life. Raised Catholic, Dick continued attending Sunday Mass throughout his life.

Dick began his public service career with the District of Columbia Government in 1964. In 1972, he joined the Federal Government’s General Services Administration, where he worked for more than three decades. Known for his consistency, diligence, and steady leadership, he served as Chief Real Estate Appraiser from 1988 until his retirement in 2005, and continued consulting until 2008. Colleagues respected him deeply for his reliability, professionalism, and integrity.

Family was always at the center of his life. He was a loving husband to Linda, his wife of more than fifty years, and a devoted father to Rebecca Wildbear and Richard Kane. He coached many of his children’s sports teams, cheered from the sidelines, and brought humor, warmth, and encouragement into everyday life. Some of their fondest shared memories were summer trips to Deep Creek Lake—quiet mornings on the water, steering a small boat together, and the simple joy of his playful, steady presence. When the family adopted their dog, Ginger, he welcomed her fully into their lives.

Dick delighted in telling stories and jokes and had a gift for lighting up a room. He praised freely and encouraged often, always quick to remind his children of their strengths. In the days his family spent with him before his passing, he made sure they knew the depth of his love, often saying, “I love you.”

A lifelong sports fan, Dick especially loved Washington football. But as the years unfolded, he made it known that family mattered far more to him than any team.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Kane, of Crofton, Maryland; his daughter, Rebecca Wildbear, of Mancos, Colorado; his son, Richard Kane, of Bethesda, Maryland; his grandchildren, Nicolas and Greta Kane; and his sister, Mary Ann Kane, of Arlington, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Kane.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Monday, November 24, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, followed by mass at 11:00 a.m. Afterwards, the family will proceed to Crownsville Veterans Cemetery for a brief burial ceremony.

Flowers are welcome. For those who wish to honor Dick’s life in another way, donations may be made in his name to the Monastery of the Holy Land in Washington, D.C.

Dick’s life was marked by dedication, humor, steadfast love, and the simple pleasures he cherished—family gatherings, shared stories, and the sweetness of a good dessert. He will be remembered with deep affection and lasting gratitude.
