ROBERT HEWITT HUFFMAN
27 OCT 1924 – 1 JUN 2021

Robert Hewitt Huffman of Crofton, MD, passed away peacefully on June 1st, 2021. He was born October 27th, 1924, in Latrobe, PA, the first son of the late Charles W. Huffman and Margaret S. (Hewitt) Huffman. Robert grew up with his brother Charles (Bill) Huffman in the Greensburg, PA area. After his early schooling in the South Greensburg School District, Robert enlisted into the United States Army and requested duties in the Air Corps branch. He had various training stations within the US, first as a power turret specialist, next as a navigator & bombardier/radar operator for a future B-29 deployment.

Utilizing his G.I. Bill for schooling at the University of Pittsburgh, Robert entered the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and graduated with his degree in 1949, but not before meeting Mary Joan Piersol and marrying her on June 18th, 1950. After moving to the Washington, D.C. area and following his postgraduate work at University of Massachusetts, his Cold War duties began in intelligence at Army Map Service then the Defense Intelligence Agency. He was involved with the Corona and Keyhole satellite programs as a Demographer. After 38 years of Federal service and countless carpool shenanigans, Robert retired in June of 1989.

In his retirement, Robert enjoyed reading about aircraft and military history and being an active member of the couponing community. He contributed to many non-profit organizations, including The National Park Foundation, The Nature Conservatory, The Humane Society, The SPCA, The Arbor Day Foundation, The Environmental Defense Fund, The United States Naval Memorial, World War II Veterans Committee, The Coast Guard Foundation, The American Red Cross, and 91.5FM WBJC his favorite classical radio station. He was also an avid fan of swimming, reading books, comics, cats, pigs, and the Washington Football Team. He would often be found chatting with neighbors or a random passerby at the grocery store with friendly conversations or a kind word.

Robert’s wife Joan preceded him in Jan 2011. His two sons – John and Charles, his daughter-in-law Diane, two grandsons and their wives, his brother “Bill” and two nephews and two nieces and their grandchildren, survive him.
