Russell Jones passed away on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the age of 81.
Born and raised in Portsmouth, VA he attended I.C. Norcom High School before continuing his education at Norfolk State University. Although he did not complete his degree, he valued education and the experiences he gained during his time there. During the integration of schools in Portsmouth he courageously participated in sit-ins, contributing to an important chapter in the struggle for civil rights and social change.
During his younger years, Russell spent summers working in hotels in New York City before eventually settling in Washington, DC. He built a long and respected career as a production supervisor at Linens of the Week and also dedicated 10 years of service to Giant Foods. Russell was known as a hardworking.
Golf was his first love. As a young caddy at Bide-A-Wee Golf Course in Portsmouth, he had the opportunity to meet his idol, Lee Elder, whose influence sparked a lifelong passion for the game. Russell became a proud member of the historical Langston Golf Course and was an avid golfer who earned many trophies over the years. Some of his greatest joy came from spending time on the golf course with friends and doing what he loved most.
Russell also had a deep love for music, especially the smooth sounds of Nancy Wilson, and enjoyed attending concerts at the Capital Centre. In quieter moments, he enjoyed working on 1,000-piece puzzles and often tried to recreate his father’s famous minced BBQ recipe, though he would jokingly admit it never tasted quite the same.
In 1970, Russell met Wilma, who remained his devoted life partner for the rest of his life. Together they shared decades of love, companionship, and cherished memories.
Russell was preceded in death by his sons, Gerard (Son of Doneva Jones) and Marcus. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved partner, Wilma; his daughters Kaprice (Kenneth Brewer) and Raschell (Daughter of Doneva Jones); his grandchildren, Gershawn, Kenny Jr., Kapri, Jamonee, Marcus Jr., and Janee; and his great-grandchildren, Tyson and Tyshawn; and his former daughter-in-law, Toyia, along with many extended family members, friends, and loved ones whose lives he touched throughout the years.
He will be remembered for his love of golf and music, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.
