In Loving Memory of Shirley Ann Hart 

On Sunday, November 9, 2025, Shirley Ann Hart passed away peacefully, entering the Lord’s rest as she awaited the resurrection.

Born in Washington, D.C., in 1935 to Martha Hart and Thomas Gray, Shirley grew up with a strong sense of purpose and service. She graduated from Cardozo High School and went on to attend the University of Maryland.

In 1953, Shirley began a remarkable career with the D.C. Government Fire Department. Over nearly four decades of service, she rose through the ranks to become Deputy Administrator, an impressive achievement in a male-dominated field. After retiring in 1991, Shirley launched a successful second career in real estate, earning recognition as Century 21's Agent of the Year on multiple occasions.

Shirley was a devoted mother to three children: the late Sheila Johnson McQueen, David Johnson and his wife Jo Anne, and Earl Gaskins and his wife India. She also lovingly welcomed James Gordon as a son, and raised her beloved niece, Dorothy Davis Barnes, as her own daughter. Her legacy continues through five grandchildren, Natasha Palmer, Ashley Johnson, David Johnson, Rachel Johnson, and Michael Johnson, and three great-grandchildren. She is also remembered by many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Joann and Joseph Barber, and her brother Samuel Gray. She was preceded in death by her daughter Sheila and siblings Dorothy Hart Davis, Barbara Ann Gray, Thomas Gray Jr., Butch Gray, and Archie Smith.

Shirley will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering faith. She loved cooking for her family, attending church, and serving her community through her work in real estate.
