Shirley Mae Heilig, born on May 26, 1935, in Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, in Annapolis, Maryland. Raised in Laurel, MD, she became a longtime resident of Bowie, MD, where she nurtured a vibrant life filled with love, family, and community.

Shirley was a devoted member of Ascension Catholic Church, where her faith played a crucial role in her life. A proud member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 66 and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Auxiliary, she actively supported veteran interests, reflecting her deep-seated commitment to service.

Shirley's greatest joy came from her beloved family. She is survived by her sons, Charles E. Heilig (Buddy) and Michael J. Heilig, alongside her cherished grandchildren: Steven (Theresa), Michelle (Pat), Jacob (Nicole), Amy (Alex), Luke, and Hannah (Aaron). She is also lovingly remembered by her 13 great-grandchildren, with whom she shared countless joyful moments.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Joseph Eugene Heilig (Gene), and her longtime companion, Buzzy Lancaster. Their memories remain a part of her legacy, treasured by those she leaves behind.

Throughout her life, Shirley engaged in hobbies that enriched her soul. She loved playing bingo, watched baseball and football with enthusiastic fervor, spent delightful afternoons playing cards with her great-grandchildren, and took great pleasure in gardening. Visiting with friends and family brought her immense happiness, highlighting her warm and inviting personality.

Shirley's life will be honored at Beall Funeral Home in Bowie, MD. Visitation will take place on January 5, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. She will be laid to rest during a burial service later that day at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Washington, DC, at 12:30 PM.
