Sukhmandip Singh Grewal, known and loved by everyone simply as Romi, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at the age of 52, surrounded by the love of his family. His wife, his son, his mother, his brother, his sister, and their families gathered close at his bedside as he took his final breaths.
Born in India on October 13, 1973, Romi’s life was a journey across continents. He immigrated to Canada in 1998, where he spent more than two decades before relocating to the United States in 2022, settling in Maryland.
Romi made his living as a truck driver, a profession he genuinely loved. He had an extraordinary sense of direction and an almost encyclopedic knowledge of highways, routes, and how to get just about anywhere, a skill his family and friends came to rely on and admire. The open road suited him, and he was exceptionally good at what he did.
But ask anyone who knew him, and they’ll tell you Romi was so much more than his work. He was the funny one. Quick with a joke, never too serious, and famous for handing out nicknames to the people he loved. He brought lightness wherever he went. He was deeply organized, a lover of good food, and someone who knew how to find joy in the everyday.
Fittingly, the man who gave so many nicknames was himself known to all simply as Romi, a name spoken with affection by family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.
Romi is survived by his beloved wife, Kamaljit Grewal, and their two sons, Jashan Grewal and Manraj Grewal, along with his mother, his brother, his sister, and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will carry his humor, his warmth, and his nicknames with them always.
He will be deeply, deeply missed.
